Opinel Friction Folder Interest? Anyone? Bueller?

I'll make this quick. My two most carried knives are my Opinel No. 6 and my Mini Svord Peasant. Please, for the love of god, don't trash the thread saying why you think one or both knives are junk. Start a new thread. It's sad that I have to say that, but I do.

I digress, I have always wanted a Opinel friction folder. If I could combine a Mini Svord with an Opinel No 6. it would be my perfect knife. Years ago I never would have considered Opinel moving away from their original design, but nowadays I'm not so sure. I'd love for them to add a friction folder and, of course, keep their current lineup. I started writing an email to Opinel, but thought it might be better if I could point them to a thread showing all of the interest (or lack thereof).

So...am I the only one?

Edit: I realize that an Opinel, I guess is a friction folder, but I'm more interested in seeing an opinel with a tang for opening much like what's on the Peasant.

Prolly never going to see that, but you could try to get a similar one built elsewhere.

If you love your Opinels check out MAM knives (or FILMAM) for a similar Franco-Iberian light traditional knife, they have great handle options.

I am a little confused. An Opinel with an exposed tang would be... a Svord Peasant knife. What qualities of the Opinel would you like to see in the Peasant?

Wood handle? You can get a Svord Peasant with wood handle.
Blade Geometry? Get yourself a file and sharpening stone and go to town!
Pinned construction with bolsters? Again, not hard to make your own scales with basic hand tools and a ball pein hammer.

I love the Svord Peasant. I was just thinking of buying one to mod.

I'm with dogstar. A "friction folder Opinel" doesn't make sense without more details from you.

Sorry. I thought I was clear.

Allow me to try again.

Imagine an Opinel with a protruding tang like that of a Svord peasant or any other friction folder of similar design so that the blade may be easily manipulated with one hand like that of a Svord peasant or any other friction folder of similar design.

It shouldn't be dificult to replace the handle on a Svord Peasant with something shaped more like an Opinel. A couple files, some sandpaper, a piece of wood and a little elbow grease and you can make it happen.

If you fail, you're out the cost of a small piece of hardwood.

You did mean an Opinel without the lock, right?

That would not work with the Opinel's ring bolster (not the lock, but the inner pinned ring), unless the tang went over the back of the handle, which would be pretty weird and ungainly.

I suppose you would have to cut the ring bolster into two parts and add a stop pin to make it work on an Opinel, but aftwards, it wouldn't be an Opinel anymore... or, I guess you can add a flat tang like on a Higonokami, but that wouldn't be like the Peasant any more...

that would make the ring completely useless, and i have a lot of trouble even trying to visualize how the two ring pieces can be used to secure the blade in the open position after it has been cut, since it has practically no more grip on the handle anymore.

The design doesn't have to hold parallel to that of the current design. I also wasn't looking for design ideas. I wouldn't be producing it. I'm not trying to be rude, but I was simply asking people if they would have an interest in such a knife. "That would be awesome!" "That's the dumbest fucking idea I've ever heard." "Who said you could talk, StinkyTool? Go back in your hole!" Any of those comments would work.

I also appreciate the suggestion to go out in my garage and turn my Svord Peasant into an Opinel. Again, not what I asked. We're all here because we like knives and options. "Dude, instead of Spyderco making a Delica you could just grind down your Endura!"

I'm already starting to regret this thread. I knew better.

Edit: Not my photos.

Psst. I think that is what people are telling you. But in a way that is within the rules for this subforum. :D

My apologies, I was just trying to figure out how something like that would work. The photo you posted explains it pretty well.

That said, I'll stick with the current versions of both knives. Happy holidays to you!

I think you did it. You could even have a Virobloc ring on it if you open the space between handle and rod. I think I like it.

You laid out what you thought would be the perfect knife. A couple people tried to give more than a yes-or-no answer so that you could have your perfect knife.

You're welcome, and No. Not interested.

Thanks Zieg, but those aren't my photos or my knife. I'm not really sure where that knife is. My buddy had texted that to me awhile back and I kept the photo in case I wanted to do a similar modification. But I think that guy had the right idea.

I actually wouldn't mind more of an Opinel/Higonokami hybrid. Just give the blade a little lifted tab on the back and you'd be golden The difficulty, though, is that the tab requires (simple) forging and that's not something Opinel is set up for at the moment.

I love opinels, and svörd peasants. I totally understand your question, and if opinel created such a thing, I'd be interested for sure (if pricing was similar to their current stuff).

My favorite thing about the peasant is that its simple, easy to use, and surprisingly robust. An opinel built the same way would be great, and would have the opinels great cutting geometry.

That's neat. I like pretty much any friction folder and those are nice. You should have led with those.

I also like the idea of the Higonokami Opinel hybrid.

Now shut up and go back in your hole.

(That was a joke good sir. ☺)
