Opinel goes MODERN!

I know it looks more "outdoor/tactical", but the partially serrated blade makes no sense to me.

These seem to be marketed toward climbers, and there is nothing like serrations to cut rope. While it is true a sharp plain edge cuts rope well enough, serrations simply do it better, especially if the knife hasn't been sharpened in a while.

At first the picture made me kinda bummed that Opinel was moving away from what made them famous. I love mine and the wood handle can't be beat for warmth, patina and comfort.

After a bit I'm now thinking that 1) they shoulda made it with something like the H1 steel that spyderco uses in it's marine environment knife the salt, and 2) if it floats I am definitely on board for one for the tackle box and the first aid kit.

H1 would be incompatible due to the work hardening induced by grinding. The machining costs would be astronomical. :o

Maybe X15TN though. :)

Apart from climbers, I know that many people do prefer serrated edges as well, even if they don't cut that much rope. I'm no climber myself...so that's why they don't make sense to me (meaning, in a knife I own). Apart from bread knives :)

Speaking of bread knives I like the look of the one they make. I'm very impressed with the chef's knives I got from them. Still a full-height convex on those puppies!

Better Hurry! I think they may be discontinued by now!

:D. jp, I dont know... I think I am in the same boat as most here when this was a thing. I like my opinels to have wood handles, the nostalgia in the knife feels lacking in the newer models, and due to that it loses some of its charm...

If I want a polymer handle that is secure and inexpensive, I will likely look at a triad lock for locking blade, or a friction folder for non locking.

I'm not keen on the look of these at all, and for a climber there are much better knives.
