Opinel Impressed me a lot...

I love Opinels too!!
I've got lotsa expensive and sharp knives, but I definitely think that the Opinel is the sharpest. Also, takes very little time and effort to sharpen.
Viva le Opinel!

my christmas opinels just came in from Ragweed's Forge and I am impressed as well. Very nice little knives. Sharpen up easily and get scary sharp, not sure on edge retention yet, have to put it to work on my day off tomorrow.

Might have to order some big ones, as someone mentioned they'd make great food prep knives for camping, and I can definitely see that. Only have a #6 right now, and two that I'll have to maintain for ma and pa :P

Everyone seems to have a favorite size Opinel but IMO you don't have THE Opinel till you get yourself a #8 carbon. Personally I most often carry a #7 but the #8 seems to be the universal standard. Heck for the price it's easy enough to try out every size till you get the right one for you. Enjoy.

I've got a No 6 in Olivewood in my pocket right now. My buddy got bit by it two night ago at the bar when he was checking it out, and wouldn't stop bleeding even while holding pressure on the cut the whole time we were there. Really sharp knives. I have a No. 6 in carbon too. Great knives.

I think this is the best knife by far to learn to get the edge right on. The folks that know what they're doing like to put a convex edge on them! I would have done that on my first a #8 but I was too lazy that day. I'll do it to a #6 when I get one.

I would love to learn how to sharpen the convex edge. I just gave it a 30 degree edge on the sharpmaker. Really sharp, but I bet they can bee sharper as a full convex. Does it really scratch up the blade sharpening as a full convex?

You might be able to lower the channel, leaving a "step" near the top of the channel (nearest the pivot) to act like a kick. The base of the blade would still be hitting, but the tip wouldn't anymore.

+1
i bought me and my dad one each a few years ago, they were cheap thought i would give them a try. mine was incredibly sharp from the factory. an absolutely great deal for the money. now i always keep it in the truck in case a need a knife, and my dad always keep his in the toolbox on his tractor.

so I didn't no i was cut till I cut another sliver of paper and saw this little curled strip of something on the blade I pulled it off and it turned out to be that piece of my thumb! I can't even feel anything on my thumb. I'm extremely impressed how sharp carbon steel gets!
Any of you guys have this happen to you? The cut is almost non existent.

While I too am an opinel fan, I haven't carved slivers of skin out accidentally with mine. However, I did have that happen once cleaning the oil off of this thing:

I was cleaning excess oil off the blade with paper towel and went too close to the edge... a few layers of paper and a layer of skin later...
