Hey guys, just wondering if anyone knows where to buy opinels in Melbourne, Australia. I've looked litterally everywhere and no dice, there must be somewhere in this knife hatting city! I've already got a #6 Which i love! And just bought a #8 in Stainless, but a #7 in carbon would go very well! Not happy with my #8.. so much different from the 6 besides obviously the blade metal, i think i got a dud :(.

Cheers guys :)

Don't remember if you had the 'King of Knives' in Melbourne, but in Sydney they are in a few shopping centers. They tend to have Opinels, however they are more in the $40 range (got a 6 in UK for 5-6 quid...) Also seen some in army disposal shops... and Online from o/s they would not be problem to get through customs.

I tend to avoid king of knives at all costs unless im desperate.. i work at a camping shop and for the sake of it decided to compare prices, at work leatherman wave = 150 KoK = 295 i just laughed, everything's way over priced. Melbourne king of kinves are mostly kitchen knives these days, thanks for the suggestion though mate :) i might have a poke around, and J man! i thought i recognized the name! I know Ron was saying he'd get some but im not sure if he followed though.. still working out the new site haha, and opinel seems weird with its imports. Ahhh well.

If you Google "Opinel Australia" then you will find the Australian distributor. They should be able to direct you to their retailers.

This website has a good selection at reasonable prices, only problem is that its in french. I have bought from them without a problem.

Why do you think yoiu got a dud in your #8in SS? I love mine after giving it a ride on the WE sharpener.

I've sharpened mine on a spyderco sharpmaker, can't be bothered with a convex edge, its hair popping! But its really stiff eaither way, i've frozen it, baked it, oiled it left it alone for a while and it hasen't got wet eaither. And doing that smashing the heal against something hard makes the oak go all jagged. So as a last restort I dremeled a finger notch into the handle which is a bit better. Its ok though im getting another one this week as I accidently ordered two from seperate companies.

Theres a bushcraft equipment (hint hint) shop in wollongong that has them .

?Frank O'Reilly's sporting goods / guns in Melbourne have had them in the past, I haven't been in recently so you'd have to check with the store re current stock. Good luck.

You say you've baked it so's this may not work but I've always had success leaving it in a hot car (like one you park in the sun all day) till it loosened up. Then, once it gets floppy loose, oil it (soak the joint).

If worse comes to worse you can take it apart and sand things looser.
