Opinel of France

They have excellent geometry, I wish they would use a better steel. I used my OP7 yesterday to cut some cardboard, and literally after a foot or two, it started tearing instead of cutting. Mine just can't keep an edge.

Geometry can fool you. Their steel isn't bad, carbon or stainless, but they do run it soft. If you've got a soft edge you will see rapid "dulling" but it may just be the wire bending over. Stropping it well would help more than sharpening it in that case. Make that convex edge work for you.

Question on the handles: are there any functional advantages to the other woods they offer? I see ash, walnut, oak, and olive. They all look prettier than the standard beechwood, but for example is oak going to be tougher in any meaningful way than beechwood? Or is walnut going to be less likely to absorb moisture, thereby preventing the dreaded blade pivot lockup? I get the impression they're just prettier, but someone please feel free to correct me.

Here's a guess based on the olivewood that I have: this may resist water better because it still have an "olive oil" scent to it! I have a strong suspicion that the natural oils in olivewood handle are pretty high based on this, but it's just a guess.

you can also be creative with the wooden handle and carve it

shud u fck it up, u can just buy another

I've been thinking about getting a few to play with. Putting pocket clips and g-10 scales on them.

and then make a super taci-cool opinel just for the hell of it.

I got a set from SMKW...Opinel™ 10pc Carbon Steel Folder Set with Wood Gift Box as it was/is neat. So nice looking in the in the wooden box, I don't use them.
