Hey guys, Im very new to the traditional world...whats the big deal about Opinel? Are they worth taking a look at? I see a lot of guys on here have them. So sell me on them :)

They are at a very, very nice price range. You get a lot of knife for little money. And they are great users. Thin blades and a very good steel that. Both combined makes an ordinary Opinel like a razor for your pocket. The bigger ones have a lock on them. The wood handle comes with no liner or a backspring which makes it easy to modifie. You should try some at your own. They come really for a steal...

I love mine. I've got the #6 the thing is awesome for food prep or just to use as an EDC. I love it. You should deffinately take a look into them :)

Do you know of anyone who would be willing to ship to Kenya? Im working here till Sept. Always in the market for a low priced user.

I'll do a thread on it when it arrives, it will see some good dirt time in Kenya for the next 6 months. Thank you again Carl...

We definitely want to see it in action in over there. I don't think we've had a thread with a traditional used to prepare bushmeat yet.

Im floored at this generosity. Thank you so much Carl.

Ah, don't mention it, your part of the traditional family now. We take care of each other, that's what families do. You can give us a run down though, on what kind of knives the local working guys are using. The poor guys doing the grunt work out in the bush.

Carl.

Thats great and Im very happy to be in the family. Over here most carry "pangas" machetes. The steel isnt that great to be honest but it gets the job done. Folders are not used a lot here. I actually brought over some folders I used in the states and they are amazed when they see them. I gifted a friend here with one and he loves it. I was invited by a local chief to go hunting with them for "dik dik" the worlds smallest antelope. It was a great experience and one I will never forget. I took my Cold Steel mini pendleton hunter, it was a great companion. He said I could come back any time to hunt (with traditional long bow) so im sure I will get to take my Opinel with me next time.

Nice gesture Carl. I love my opinels, been a lot of threads on them lately, it's a good thing.

Very cool gesture. I ordered one to see what it's about, and to do a handle mod. Someone had carved a dragon design on a different thread on the forum.

Here are a couple of opinels I modified and have posted before. One is a number 6 fixed blade, the other a number 8 folder. You'll love these knives (opinels)), lots of fun as is and great to personalize.

Regards

Robin

Of the 4 I've owned within this past year, I've given 3 of them away as gifts. They're very simplistic, hence, very consistent. And they're easy enough to tweak if you get a loose one. I know "high value" is thrown around alot, but an opinel pocket knife is literally the highest value brand I've come across in the YEARS I've been collecting. Not to mention the virtual weightlessness compared to size.

Thanks guys! I cant wait to get mine in the mail! I love those pics that were posted as well, those mods are sick! Thanks again all.

Hey, congrats on your incoming Opinel!
Carl, very nice gesture. Good on ya!

Sorry if this is too off-topic, but... Have you seen any Okapi knives in Africa? They're made in South Africa, so I'd be curious to learn whether the folks in the region where you are have heard of them.
