Opinion: Frame Locks are Ugly

Dimashkieh Dimashkieh i didn’t reveal anything, your posts on this forum are open for anyone to look at.

Really I was mostly joking about the knives you like being ugly, I was just trying to show that what you or I may not like, others do.

But really though, that Medford has a strange look to it.

But what about other locks (Lockback, Tri-ad Lock, Axis lock, Sub-frame lock, etc...)? They are all esthetically better than frame lock in my opinion, and some may be arguably stronger. This is not about frame lock vs liner lock. It is mainly, why does a good reliable EDC knife have to be ugly?
Some of those aren't one hand close. And a sub frame lock still has a lockbar, so not sure how you think it's that different aesthetically

There is nothing wrong in sending an offer to someone selling an item with “best offer.”

Now that you exposed my identity (I use my real name everywhere), and the fact that I own ugly knives and “try” to buy knives (whatever that means), and especially after the lovely emojis you posted, I should live in shame for the rest of my life in the knife community and beyond. Well done man, you must feel satisfied with your supposed victory or whatever feeling that gave you.

Ironically, this is my second post on this forum, and just before this post I was reading a lovely post titled “We were all new here once.” Now I understand and appreciate it even more.
I think you misunderstood what he was trying to say. I think he was saying that the Medford you were interested in was a big chunk of funky ugly based on the criteria you set forth.

Frame-lock or Liner-lock ?

Shark lock is great, it still has a pocket clip.
The Ace Grand liner lock believe it or not is harder to disengage than the Olamic and Koenig frame locks, it's just the way it's put together and doesn't bother me at all and I love that knife. Pocket clip.
Spyderco lock back, pocket clip.

Would I carry any of these without the pocket clip?
I'd probably go with a small fixed blade (which I sometimes do) on my belt or pocket instead of a folding pocket brick.
The pocket clip will always ruin the symmetry aspect.

I can't speak for the cheap knives (the Gerber at the bottom was a gift a long time ago) but a quality well made EDC with a frame locks a really nice to hold, use and operate.

It's all for sale... Lol

Ahem:

I know, and I already have a Medford and a Hinderer, and two Chris Reeve, and I love them all and love their action and sturdiness. But, in my opinion, they are not the most esthetically pleasing knives.

What I answered was his way of mentioning an offer I sent to a seller on eBay (clearly him) and he made it as if he caught me red handed.

I agree. It makes the knife look unfinished.
I need to clarify my statement. It's not so much the framelock itself that's bad, it's the way some knives are done that looks bad. Certain knives are prettied up on the lock side and others just look like the scale fell off and wasn't replaced.

I think it's a bit more like looking at abstract art.

Everydody appreciates a different aspect of knife design and those preferences will lead them.

For example:

A framelock is not my preferred locking mechanism, but my preferred EDC is a large sebenza 21.
I like it because of the pivot bushing which is not offered by many major manufacturers out there.
The locking mechanism is not really put into consideration because I value the pivot bushing more than what type of lock it is.

As far as aesthetics, it's really up to the individual. I just pulled the 21 out of my pocket to look at and all I really think is that it just looks "right" meaning the proportions are fine, the lines flow pretty well, and it's comfortable to hold in a variety of different grips.

I think the ZT 0456 looked fine on the lock side but for the horrible clip it came with. The MXG Gear clip changed all that, as far as I'm concerned...

And that's why we all get to choose with our wallets. Not my style either, but I'll bet plenty of people feel differently. Be pretty boring otherwise, imho.

In all my collection I believe I only have 2 frame locks. I personally don’t have much interest in the lock type.

I don’t think they are ugly though, as there are some very attractive designs out there.

I don’t like how they feel in hand, or how they operate. Of course, that could change in the future.

Ugly is in the eye of the beholder. Sometimes, tho, it's just pretty damn difficult to picture what the designer was thinking with a specific piece.

Unless a maker does something absolutely hideous, I don't find frame locks to be particularly displeasing, aesthetically. YMMV....
