Opinion: Is it poor taste for a production knife company to post in General Knife Discussion??

I have no problem with it as long as the threads create good discussion, which they have. They've been a refreshing change.

IMO, if you have a problem with the threads that have been started, let a moderator know. If the mods have no qualms with it, just drop the subject. There's no need to start a thread to get the opinion of others.

You made your opinion known on the last thread they created. Just leave it at that.

This is also a valid opinion...however, now you are doing what I did in the Kizer thread...your opinion is that you dont like this thread...and you have stated it. But, you are also telling me that there is no need for this thread and to “just leave it at that.”

I never said I don't like this thread. I said there was no need to start it to get everyone else's opinion. Just let the mods handle it.

Freedom of the press. as long as they are not spamming i dont see why they dont get freedom of the press like the rest of us.

If it's true discussion or advice that's fine, these Kizer posts are just thinly veiled promos and getting tiresome.

Freedom of Press, indeed. Just one of the 5 rights granted by the First Amendment.

Then there is my very personal freedom of choice. I do find the Kizer posts quite clumsy and consider them NOT so thinly veiled promos. I pass them by. I still sleep good at night :)

That one hasn't bothered me much , but a hundred more certainly would make things difficult to sort out ! o_O

Pretty sure the mods will handle it . :p

I think as long as it is a general question that doe not revolve around their specific brand then they have the right to ask any question they want. If it is specifically about their knives then it belongs in their forum.

... I don't think they're thinly veiled promos, they seem general to me (but often repeats of older threads, like, 'mod' threads probably count in the hundreds)

Personally, I'd love to see more posts from Sal, & other well known mfg/makers in the general forum. If they're not pushing one of their models, I'd honestly like to hear their opinions on the topics we like to talk about. I expect they may have interesting insights to share.

Members, mfg & makers post as you like. If you feel something is out of line. Report it to the mods & they will decide. Easy peazy!

I don’t see what the problem is. They’ve paid and they have the right to use this board within the guidelines set forth. Why pay for a Membership if the brand can’t bring attention to itself? They not spamming, not violating any rules, so again what’s the issue?

In my opinion it shouldn’t be “who” the poster is, but “what” they talk about that matters. If it’s right for the particular section of the forum, it shouldn’t matter who the poster is.

That pretty much matches my opinion.

I don't have a problem if a knife company wants to understand the prospective customer base by asking questions in general forum to get a better feel for the knife knut mentality. IMO, most folks who post in the brand-specific subforums are already "sold on the brand". If you post in General, you get a wider audience.

So as long as its discussion and not promotion, I pretty much don't have a problem with it.
Granted that can be a judgement call and our judgement may not match yours.

However, the mods don't read every thread. We all have day jobs to pay the bills and moderate in our "free time". So, if you have a problem with a post or a thread, report it and a moderator will look at it next time one is available.

I think it should be considered a honor to have Big knife companies stop by by discuss their products with BF members. It gives them a chance to show us new products or toss ideas around so that they can get vitale input to hopefully make us a knife we want or need as long as it doesnt turn into a shill fest and the Mods will be more than happy to put breaks to it if it does so i'm more than fine with it.

Thank you for posting here.

Should I lock this thread now and let it sink to the depths?

This for sure!

I dont disagree with you. It is an honor. We have plenty of big knife companies in their own subforum here on BF.
My opinion is that they could be posting there instead of GKD :)

Depends on the content. If it’s just an advertisement it seems a little out of place. But they are hopefully knife nerds and deserve to enjoy the whole forum.

They are paying good money to be here and are supporting the forum.

From the gerber thread...

Just a little clarification about the “they pay good money to be here” comments.

I guess I see it this way...

I see the GKD for the joe shmo like me...we start a thread asking for advice, pictures, info, the what-have-you. I wake in the morning to find these threads from guys/gals just like me!
Now, if every Brand had a “question/insight what-have-you” every day...guess where the average joe’s post is gonna be before anyone gets to read it? Page 3? 9?
That’s where im coming from. In a round about way...it is advertising.

And lets not kid ourselves, these brands are not here to help us, or to understand how to ano or what-have-you.
They are here for our money. Plain and simple.
