Opinion on hest fixed blade

Im really starting to think i hate it. I very rarely use it but wear it every day. It cant seem to hold an edge, blade is too thick, prybar jabs the side when worn on a belt (which is how i wear it), the tang being exosed over the scales is uncomfortable and to top it all off....the knife is not snug in the sheath and rattles. I just have been very disapointed with this knife in general. anyone else have any thoughts? I cant wait to get my Izula 2 to replace this as an edc. its just too thick for an edc general use knife imo

** I am saying nothing bad about ESEE. I love their products, the best imo. but i just dont think the collaboration with dpx was the best of choices. a small 3" blade does not need to be so thick. (i think it was a great idea the 2 companies parted ways)

I'll probably never understand the appeal of that knife. I can honestly say that I've never wished I had a pry bar or bottle opener feature on one of my fixed blade knives. Lots of people seem to love em' though. I'm just not one of them.

i dont think im ever going to get rid of it though....they dont make it anymore but once i get the izula i am no longer carrying it.

I had a HEST for a little while, but moved it along. I didn't have much use for its extra features. I don't mind a 3/16" thick knife in that size, but something about the feel of it was off. Call me crazy, but I think it was because it wasn't heavy enough due to the hollow handle. I guess I also tend to prefer neutral or slightly handle heavy in knives...

I definitely prefer my Izula II; it's tied for my favorite knife. The extra half inch on the handle and the flush scales just blow the original Izula out of the water for me. I actually also think the Izzy's sheath does a better job at balancing retention and ease of draw than the HEST's (or pretty much any sheath I've handled).

That knife never appealed to me. Novel idea at best, IMO. It was one of those ideas that tries to do so many different things that it can't do one single thing well.

I got one since I loved the izula so much but after using them both for a few monthes the izula just felt better, was a lot less complex and rode better on my belt so I wasn't too impressed with it either. it just never grew on me.

I actually love my HEST. I EDC'd it for a while, and it carried fine (horizontal @ 3 O'Clock on my belt). Didn't jab me in the side at all. I'm carrying my Izula in the same position right now, though I like to change it up every once in a while.

I think that it looks nice, but ive never had the need for a prybar on my knife. And the bottle-opener...well, if you cant open a bottle with any regular knife, then you dont drink enough! Any knife spine will do.

But its not a knife id buy. I just have no need for it.

I bought a Hest and it's ok. Would I buy it again? Probably not. For a small fixed I'd rather carry the Izula.
There's a lot of hype in the knife business and the Hest was up there. Is it a bit gimmicky? Yes. Is it a useful knife? Yes. It's a one-of-a kind knife which makes it unique ( and difficult to find an Esee version now)
But my tastes go for the regular Esee line and others like it and in the end the Hest doesn't see much carry. The prybar does dig in your side and get caught on things I noticed and it's a little too thick for a small knife. Traditional knife designs are time'tested and just much more useful. The less gimmicks, the better.

I like the HEST,is still one of my favorites,
Nevertheless, i like my Izula too.., and the milie, the 710, the sak soldier...well, ...hell, must be that i like knives :D
back to the original idea of the thread, i really like the options the HEST blade offers, and i think it looks very good with that shape ; it ain't ugly, is just different
also i like the idea of the HEST, all survivalish, with handle storage place, lashing options, pot lifter/bottle opener, wire breaker, dedicated pry bar, tough construction, whats not to love ? :D

I guess I could rephrase my statement a bit. I dont like the hest as an edc blade. I think it would be a great blade for its intended use's (ie, "dangerous places"). Its a great knife to have if you are always subject to a survival situation and need one that is concealable. I have always thought that the prybar end would be great as a glass breaker and also as a non leathal impact tool. And yes, the ESEE version is hard to find, no longer in production, I am very glad to own one. It was my first "real" knife and the knife that got me into ESEE in the first place. Well i had a cs recon scout first and hated that thing more than anything. So i dont count the cs as being my first "real" knife. Sucker chipped out bad like a week after i got it.

the ESEE version still can be found fairly easy, as for the new one from TOPS, i don't think is out yet, and I believe the stainless HEST 2 will come before that
of course, the Izula carries much easier, being smaller, lighter, but i do carry the fixed HEST from time to time, just for fun.

i think it's a great small fixed blade; it is an all-purpose tool for me...i will use it to cut, pry, dig, scrape; anything and everything; the thickness is a virtue...i don't carry it for tacticool and i certainly i am not afraid to use/abuse it...

:thumbup: best way to use the HEST :D
