OK I hope this does not get bumped for not being general knife discussion because it does have to do with our community. If am wrong, I apologize. I am in the market for a fairly high end knife and am keeping close tabs on the exchange for the right one to come up (it's an XM-18 I'm after if you're wondering & that should help explain the hunt.) Anyhow there is a lot of ducks to line up in order I am getting what I want. I'm spending a lot here. It has to come up in the first place, I want certain blade grind, flipper etc. My problem. With all that I have noticed an awful lot of sellers are stipulating CONUS only. I am in Canada. Why the shipping concern. I have ordered/sent knives many times across the boarder with out ever having an issue. The difference in shipping cost is negligible and regardless, I have no problem covering that. Does no international sales mean something more like overseas? That would make more sense. Canada and the US are HUGE trading partners. What am I missing? This seems like an unnecessary obstacle to an already challenging hunt.

Where a seller does or doesn't ship is their prerogative and it can be influenced by many things. Speaking only for myself I'll tell you it's not personal, just business. I understand this probably gives you no comfort when it seems to negatively affect your quest for a grail knife because you are investing time, energy and, eventually, money in it.

You should check the threads Esav linked to go over past discussion to see if that gives you a better sense of where some folks are coming from in their position on this question.

due to overzealous/oppressive Canadian knife laws. don't feel bad, there are usa sellers who won't ship to ny state because of the nyc crazy knife laws. it's is nothing personal....it is all because no one wants to get stuck in a shipping/legal mess. in your case.....when an overzealous customs agent decides to cause trouble. make sense?

Overzealous Canadian knife laws?? Are you kidding? There are a few limits on knife type (can't be opened using "centrifugal force" butterfly, auto's or push) That's pretty much it. The reason most sellers don't ship outside of the US is that it tends to be easier to lose in transit by the postal companies. This doesn't happen in Canada (or any other country) if the proper precautions are taken (only ship if you can track it).

My recommendation is that if you see the XM-18 you want send the seller an email saying that you live in Canada, and would they consider shipping it to you, and that you will cover shipping etc. The worst they can say is no, but I would be willing to bet that most sellers would not want to pass up a sale. (and don't forget to ask them to tighten up the pivot)

Right. The knife laws here are pretty relaxed(relatively) . As you mentioned only a few types are limited(absurd laws none the less but that is another subject). The only other thing is you're not to conceal a knife as a weapon. Technically, I can carry a Junglas, no problem. Context plays a big roll. Like I mentioned, I have never had an issue with knives I have ordered. None missing, none refused at customs. Know the law and things should be fine. Since my original post, I have found and made payment on the perfect specimen. The dealer in Tennessee did not bat an eye at the mention of Canada. Thanks for input all.

All relative obviously. No I wasn't kidding. Where I live the idea of a one handed pocket knife having to have the pivot tightened to clear customs is plain old silly. Down here in the old swampy south I can cary and use autos, balis, any size fixed blade, machete, folders of any size and type, even those illegal "flick" knives up there. To me not being able to carry or use cutting tools because of a spring or size or design is overzealous. Guess we all have different takes on overzealous knife laws. So be it.
