Opinion on the sharpmaker

Something to remember. You can't clean the brown rods enough. If the bevel is right you should almost pop hair before the fine rods.
 
Yeah, the Sharpmaker does have its limitations as others have pointed out that I did not in my earlier post. It is still a very good system.

and what is the best way to clean the rods?
 
The Sharpmaker has holes for the rods that are set at 15 and 20 degrees, assuming you hold the knife at 90 degrees (straight up and down) as you grind with the rods. So if you use it correctly with the rods in the 15 degree slots, your bevel will be right at 15 degrees plus or minus a very small amount of error due to the user's hand deviating a small degree from 90 degrees. If you could hold the the blade fairly straight as you sharpen, it should end up very close to 15 degrees. Same with the 20 degree slots.
