:o Hi! Just wanted to get your opinions on the Buck Vanguard. How is this knife for field dressing deer? Does it keep a good edge? Any other Pros or Cons?

Thanks!!!!!

Greg

Welcome to the Buck Forum Greg!!!

Cabellas sells a Vanguard (order online) with a S30V blade, and the same in a 110.

I used them both for the first time (s30v that is) last hunting season and they will be my future users for whitetail. There are some old threads here about it and the Alaskan Guide Vanguards and 110's.

You can't go wrong.

Please read the above sticky threads on our efforts to get a Buck buy/sell/trade forum specific to Buck knives... Join in!!!

Hi Greg welcome to the Buck forum!
I love my vanguard!!!!! I prefer the standard model with the 420HC steel.
The rubber handled 692R Vanguard is nice for grip when wet or cold!
But I prefer the 192BR for use and looks!!! Holds a great edge!!
They are both nice no drawbacks at all to me!!! Maybe look into the 191/691
Zipper? They are real handy! Good luck with your purchase!

Yeah, but, again, who REALLY uses that "gut hook" except for Darryl in his line of work?
I got a riding brother of mine that works at a butcher shop a Zip for a gift as he had been packing a zipper-knock-off for quite awhile. When I asked him if he ever used the gut-hook, he said "no". So, I remain a ponderin' Goose.

...LOL...I knew I shoulda never mentioned what I did fer a living...and it's actually a long tube with a light and a camera...

I dont know why I would recommend it if I didnt use it :D
My Dad also prefers the Zipper...
I guess its just handy for opening the deer up like a zipper! Dont have to worry about cutting anything else!

I didn't mean to imply that you or Darryl would recommended it...just imagine he'd would use it for hanging things.
Just wondering for you huntin' kine dudes out there if ya ever really use the hook.

I am bidding on a guthook-equipped 2-blader right now...it will replace the Mikov taped to my SUV seat for emergencies... :)

...It sounds like an idea that has worked for a lotta folks in dressing out their game for quite some time. As for me...I don't think I can relearn how to dress game or have confidence in that hook taking the place of my fingers slipped between the blade and belly when making those cuts...

Either way you cant go wrong! I also like the Vanguard for field dressing ducks, geese and rabbits too.. A+++, *****, Thumbs up!!!
Great knives!

I have never used a hook... For the initial opening of a deer, I make a slit just under the sternum enough to put a couple of fingers in. Hold a 110 between them and lift the skin up as I slide the blade toward the pelvic. Thus I love the clip blade 110 versus a drop because it points in the right direction, up against the skin.

Then the 110 is easier / smaller for going inside and freeing the membrane (sp) to roll the guts out. Actully, for that part I prefer an old Western muskrat. Not as likely to puncher something in there.

Then I use either the Vanguard or the 110 for stripping the meat (quartering) after we have stripped the skin off ( totally another story).

Another thought for you...... The actual cutting edge of a 110 versus a Vanguard is only 1/4 inch or less. Vanguard longer...

Main advantage for me of Vanguard, is sometimes my hand gets real tired (carpral tunnel) holding the smaller 110 and the rubber Vanguard relieves that.

My IDEAL knife for working a deer after the initial field dressing (gutting) would be a 118 with a S30V steel and slightly larger rubber handle.

Mean while the Vanguard and 110 are my users.

Gsp, My brother-in-law has used the Vanguard for Deer for the
last 5 or 6 years and he love's his.I think you will too if you try it.

The one I just won is a Remington R-3; their "Folding Hunter", clip-point blade + guthook/saw...

I kept untaping the Mikov and using it for everyday stuff at work...finally said "Enough! I need a dedicated seatbelt cutter! I need the Mikov for my EDC!"... :D

...The hammer is another problem...

I've used the Buck Vanguard for years on pigs and deer both. Anyone that's ever hunted pigs knows that they are extremely tough on knives. The Vanguard will easily go through two, sometimes three pigs without touching up, and it will handle several deer before you need to do more than strop it. I like the kraton handle too...no slip at all.
