I am new to this forum but have used knives alot because I love hunting and camping. I am looking to buy a new knife that would be good for camping and hunting. I wanted something that has a great edge and would be good for chopping. I was looking at some of the sog knives and was wondering if anyone else had any ideas of a good quality knife

Bark Rivers, most any one of them. Pay attention to the Fox River and Bravo 1 especially.

also I want a sheathed fixed blade knife that is preferably over all 8 inches or more in length. I am sorta looking at getting a big knife almost like a bowie.

Take a look at the Busse knives. I have never owned one but they are really heavy duty looking knives. I want to get one but not sure which style yet. A lot of people on here swear by them.

Look at the Fallkniven NL1 Thor at fallkniven dot com

I have never carried one but I own its little brother, the NL2. Not a cheap kife but I am very pleased with the performance, edge, and overall quality. Not too crazy about the leather sheat, there are great custome sheats out there.

For a big chopper at a reasonable cost, I would definitely go with the Ontario RTAK. Many websites sell these. I know that chestnutridgeknifeshop has them and they are a pleasure to deal with. If you don't want to spend a few hundred bucks, this is the way to go. They are around $100 I think.

consider Ranger Ready Detachment in 5160. 1/4" thick steel with micarta handles. awesome knife for the money rd-7, rd-9. I have the rd-7 extremely tough chopper. I think this knife could take anything, the only problem i had is the black finish started coming off imediately so I stripped the finish sanded and polish it. Looks pretty good. Right at $100.00

Fallkniven F1, S1 or A1.
Get the F1 and you will never be disappointed.
The S1/ A1 is more of a chopper, so get that one too :)

Yes, the Ranger DOES hold a good edge. And Justin (who own Ranger knives) will make you a custom at a reasonable price too. He has EXCELLENT customer service!

The Bark River Bravo-1 is highly recommended for the tough jobs of camping. This knife was developed with the assistance of the Training Unit of the Force Recon Division of the U.S. Marine Corp. These folks Bought a large number of knives on the Commercial market and tested them without saying anything to any of the makers.

The Bark River Gameskeeper came out on Top to Fit their Requirements of a Real Time General Purpose Survival/Bushcraft Knife.

BRKT was Contacted by them and asked to make a knife based on the Gameskeeper with a Few Changes.

The Bravo-1 is the Result of their Input.
