Opinion Poll, signed knives....

To me, the 802, 803, 805, and 819 signature series knives are some of the most beautiful knives Buck has made. I know it is called the signature series, but to me the signatures really ruin a beautiful knife. I am firmly in the no signature camp.

Man, that is a terrible shame. Absolutely beautiful knife.

I think a Buck family member’s real, in-person signature on a knife is awesome and certainly adds value to the knife. It shows a human connection and that someone, you or a previous owner, took the effort to make that connection to the family and company that produced the knife.

I’m not a huge fan of the printed/etched-on “autopen” signatures, although I do own one because it’s my only Joe Houser custom (thus far :) ). Now if I ever get the opportunity to have Joe or CJ sign it in person, that would be cool!

I agree, I thought about using the Signature Series as an example. But then, without the signature, what would the series be called?

I'm not a fan of autographed knives but I do have 3. 2 are Chuck signed blades that only came from the factory signed - 929 Senior Skinner, and the canoe that was an AG Russell collab. The canoe oddly enough has only Chucks mark.
The 3rd is a 110 i put a lanyard on and showed to CJ years back. Apparently his mark of approval.

Oh.. I do also have the Chairman 303. I don't consider that a signed knife though.

I'm not a fan of blades with signatures, cut-outs or any other embellishments.

I guess if you had the knife signed in person that could be nice....

However I have purchased them, like when there was a Vanguard offered with a maroon micarta handle and S30v blade.
😁

I generally don't care for knives that have obscene, political or religious symbolism or messages on it. I am a Christian but don't want it on my knives. I also don't care for personal engraving. I don't mind knives with advertising logos or safety awards. As far as engraving with Buck family signatures, I am not generally a fan of it but not enough to stop me from buying it if I like the knife. Unless, the knife is supposed to have a signature on it and it is missing, then I'd prefer the signature on it.

I've owned a lot of Buck knives through the years including the first knife I ever bought with my own money a 110. I can see a collector that buys a knife for a display case maybe wanting a signed knife, but I don't buy knives just for display purposes (and no I have nothing against those who like to collect and display knives).

So if I had the same model of knife sitting in front of me, one signed one not signed ... easy choice I'd buy the unsigned one.

Or would you say that you'd buy whichever is cheaper, since you are a user? I am just a collector, not much of a user, but I don't really care about signatures.

No, I would buy the unsigned knife. The signatures are scratches in the blades, although tiny in depth it just creates places that can trap fluids/material when used more so than a smooth surface.

I saw a comment not long ago, can't remember where, it went something like...
"I never cared about something enough to have it tattooed on my body or stuck on my bumper"
I guess we could add... "or printed on the blade of my knife" 😁
.

I do love the Art knives. However, I don't think a signature adds anything to the value of a knife. As Roger said if you got your own knife signed in person the it means someting to just you in the form of a memory.

Here is a copy of one of my old treads for you viewing pleasure

Hi All,

I thought I'd use Armands thread on meeting Chuck Buck at Bass Pro Shop and save the forum some space (hope you don't mind Armand).

Chuck Buck was doing a meet & greet knife signing gig at the Mantica CA BP on 8/20, 8/21 this week. I hope anyone who lives in the area had the chance to drop in and say hi to Chuck. It was the first time I had the opportunity to meet any of the Buck family and CB is genuinely a kind and gracious man.

I have been working out of state and only get home on the weekend if time allows it. That said time spent with my wife is limited and short, she also works the weekend days....so a whole day spent together now is rare. Saturday 8/21 she had the day off to spend with me. My wife is into the Buck knife thing about as much as holding a bunch of worms....she doesn't like it at all. But, she knows how much I love my Buck knives so she was a good sport and said, "I'll go with you just to spend the time together".

We spent the 90 minute drive out to Mantica chatting, until we arrived at the store. She made it clear to JB "YOU CAN"T BUY ANY NEW KNIVES, WE CAN"T AFORD IT"......gulp ok honey......I said. When we arrived at the knife section there was MR. Buck signing a knife for a fellow customer, so we waited our turn. Chuck is truly a warm and caring man as we talked, he told my wife she was a good sport for coming along. My wife said to MR. Buck that he was the bane of her existence....then rephrased it to your company's knives are the bane of her existence because I have a whole room full of them at home! I was a little surprised at the turn in the conversation (thinking oh sh..).

Chuck, being a shrewd and savvy salesman took the opportunity to direct the conversation to kitchen cutlery. Then he told her about a kitchen knife that his wife loves a 941 spreader, Chuck then said "I have one out in my car I'd like to give you". The man told the sales manager he was going to take a short break, left the signing and took us outside to his auto and presented the knife to my wife. He took the time to show her the knife, and told her to be careful as that it's edge was very sharp.

Upon returning home she was telling her story of how she came to have such a wonderful gift from MR. Buck. She explained everything Chuck had said about the kitchen utensil right down to the warning about very sharp edge and just touched the edge and got a small cut on her finger;).
THANK YOU MR. BUCK.

I don't actively look for or collect signature knives but have attended the Bourbon and Blades show the last 2 years and had CJ Buck sign the 110 and 112 I purchased. I would not of purchased these knives if they were presigned. But it was the opportunity to meet CJ that convinced me to buy them. The show has been scheduled again this year and I am looking forward getting my 3rd CJ Buck signed knife.

This is where I'd agree that that would be neat. If a standard 110 were purchased, and I actually met the gentleman, that would probably be the only time I'd be ok with it (for me personally, not as in a general sense!).

I would buy a 305 signed by Chuck Buck.
I really love my signature series, but it would be cool if the signature was real.
I don't want some random signature on the blade and wish the engraving option was done on the handle or something other than the blade, but when it's Chuck Bucks signature it's a completely different situation.

He was " THE MAN " and having his autograph on a knife is cool.

I am not really a fan of signatures but with that said, I had the oppurtunity to purchase my holy grail Version 1 Buck 110. Of course I seized the moment and was elated. I shared the image and was immediately shamed on how they would never get a signed knife. I was a little deflated but now embrace my knife and own two other Ver 1 knives. My new opinon is; Please tell your waiter how you like your steak; He might actually care.
