Opinion? The better Stockman

I don't know where you shopped but there are a couple places you can pick up Case 6318 (3 5/8") and 6347s (3 7/8") for the same price or less than a Buck 301. And you don't need to settle for the Zytel handle either! Don't get me wrong I own a couple 301s. Solid knives, I just never really liked the main blade profile. Too abrupt a clip and prefer the long clip Case offers. Plus with Case you have the option of CV or SS and their SS hold an edge just as well as Buck.

I got it from "the big a" site (a dangerous to my budget site, if there ever was one), just over $20, including shipping.

Ok, I can do details if needed, but Frank is my go-to metal guy and I trust what he says. I am more in the area of being a cloud watcher. As a kid I had mainly Old Timers, but one day a Buck was in my hand and the bells and whistles went off. It just felt right. Just like Case has positives, Buck has some also. Hold them in your hand, open and close them, if possible borrow both from friends and whittle a stick. Then go with the one that whispers in your ear. My Grandpa carried Case, but I went down a different path to my own patch of sunlight. We can talk details till we are blue. One of them is right for the OP, he has to feel it for himself. Just like I hear the trumpets in the distance when I am fooling with a Camillus TL - 29. Its all good...300Bucks

Not sure if I've become a "knife snob" or not, but since getting the 110 and 389, I've only EDC'd the Bucks and CRKT "Guppie" multi-tool. Since getting a SAK belt clip I've added my Marbles all stainless steel camp knife, though, as a second multi-tool, ands to give me the option of a spear point blade. My Rough Riders, which I still like, were displaced from my pocket by the Buck knives. The Taylor-Schrade Uncle Henry LB7 (which is a great knife, equal to or better than the Uncle Henry and Old Timer's I had back in the 70's and 80's)
was taken off my belt in favor of the Buck 110, even though the Uncle Henry has the flush scale/cover pins that I prefer.
Right now, I have the Buck 301, 110, Marbles, and CRKT on me. After I get home (expect that to happen around June 2nd or so ... hopefully I can afford to take some home time then) my pocket carry may change to a Case canoe or (and?) 90's Case 031 that were gifted to me. Those are my first Case knives, but some family members did carry a Case of one sort or another. I've handled the Case trapper, it did not "talk to me" like other knives have. The Case Trapper is a good knife, don't get me wrong, it is just not for me. It might be the pattern, to date, no Trapper has made me feel I "need" one.
I like the Stockman in my pocket, but I miss the canoe. I think I'll go to the truck and add it to my pocket. NO law that says I can't carry both a stockman and canoe, right?

sfishhunter - I noted you mentioned that your current Schrade Taylor made (Chinese right?) are equal to your earlier US made models? I've only the earlier Buck & Old Timers and have been kinda leery of the new offshore made versions. Do they really compare that favorably?

I can't speak for the slip joints, since I've never owned a Schrade slippie before the Taylor Schrade Imperial Congress I recently bought. As far as the lockbacks go, the LB7 I have has no blade play in any direction, open or closed, fit and finish is in my eye, anyway, as good as or better than the knives I bought back in the pre Taylor Chinese made knives; no gaps, covers tight to the bolsters, and they come out of the box sharper than ever., and it holds an edge just as well as the older ones. IMHO the new Chinese made are just as good as the older ones, and they do not use that whatchamacallit key construction, so the blade should stay wiggle free a heck of a lot longer, and be easily tightened up if they ever do develop blade wiggle.
Like any supplier, the Chinese build the quality the customer wants. Taylor wants/wanted the same or better quality as the USA made Schrade knives, and that is what he is getting, at a price point favorable to the originals. I paid, if memory serves, around $35 for my last USA made LB7 (or was it the 7OT?) back before Schrade started having difficulties. The Taylor-Schrade I bought at a truck stop last year cost $34.95 plus tax. I will admit, when I bought it, I was not aware Schrade had gone under, the name and designs bought by Taylor, and manufacture now took place in China. Personally, the country of origin means little to me. It is the quality of the product for the price that matters to me. I also have a small collection of Rough Rider, Colt, and a Chinese made Marbles knives. All are an amazing deal at their price, and compare favorably to knives costing much, much more that are made in other countries, including the US and Germany.

Nope, it's legal to carry both stockman and canoe simultaneously, at least in Michigan. ;)
I'm working on a "personal law" though that mandates that I MUST carry a stockman AND a canoe at all times (there will probably be some other mandatory patterns as well).

We seem to have similar knife tastes, afishhunter. I'm not a trapper fan, but I do like stockman knives in various sizes (sowbelly pattern seems to be my current favorite stockman) and I'm starting to accumulate some canoes. Sounds like you enjoy your Buck canoe, and I'll be interested in a report on your Case canoe. Are your canoes 1-spring or 2-spring design? All of mine so far are 2-spring, but I'd like to try a single-spring version someday.

The Taylor slippies are sturdy and well made but not the equal of classic USA Schrades in terms of fit, finish, smoothness or materials IMO. BTW, the Taylors are all SS blades so no direct comparison to classic Schrade carbon is available. My Taylors were some of the early ones and are good working knives.

Kind of confirmed my suspicions Robert. I know the Chinese are capable of making a decent knife, but for instance, I just seen a NIB Uncle Henry Cigar Cutter go for $8 on the 'bay. How good can it be? Lol. I did like the match striker pulls on it though.

This thread is making me want a Camillus-made 303 in the worst way. I love the look of the long pull on this pattern.

Circa mid 1970s, this was my brother's knife. It's still going strong.

Here's my 301 from the 70's I think...it was my Dad's.

I can't remember if it's Camillus made or not....

My canoes are all two spring. I think the only single spring slippy I have is a single blade large Rough Rider Coke Bottle.

The Buck 301 is a triple spring, not sure about the 6 blade sowbelly Hammer Brand stockman I bought for my birthday, have not been home to see it yet.

Ouch. I have been thinking about having a go with the Stockman pattern but this makes me hesitate. How about Case, are they also triple spring?

The reason I hesitate on the Stockman is that I do not now how they carry. I don't want a full size Stockman, but a medium sized and most definately a two-spring, if there is such a knife.

This is the one I mostly covet.

My 3 ½” Case stockman has two springs.

I normally carry a Vic Farmer. It does not obtrude in my pocket.

The Case stockman makes the Farmer look and feel bulky.

The Böker Germany carbon Stockman is a very compact carry with low riding Sheepfoot. The CASE 63 Medium Stockman is not bulky either.

Thank you both. This looks promising. Come autumn I will most certainly look at Stockman's more closely.

Hi!

I like the looks of the Case and Buck very much. I only have a Colt Stockman but carry it a lot and really like the knife. Depending oin the use you're going to give it, maybe this is not a bad option, either.

Cheers!

Hello and welcome buddy!!!

Thanks! I thought it might be you, considering the pics.

I've heard folks talk about this forum and since I'm more of a knife guy than a tool guy, I thought about troll... huh... participating in it.
