What do you folks think about a potential buyer asking the seller to "hold" the knife, while the "potential buyer" decides whether he can put together the money to buy it?

So far, I've just replied "the knife is for sale, on a first come, first serve basis. The first buyer who says he wants to buy the knife, at the agreed on price..., the knife is his."

I figure that's only fair to both myself and those who want the knife.

I've had a seller offer to hold a knife for me before. As a matter of fact I am sending out a MO today for it. I didn't ask for it to be held though, he offered and I told him that it would be a little more than a month before I would be able to pay. It was still there when I checked back with him.

I think it depends upon your need to move the knife. If you need cash now, go with the first person with a check in hand. If you can afford to wait, do so and if the person comes up with the money then you have not only moved the knife but also made a great impression. This will help in future transactions I assure you.

There are some relevant replies on the recent "Chris Jon, John Frank" thread.

It really comes down to the terms agreed upon among partys involved. State your specifics and ask for same in reply. If an agreement is made without "fine print", then it should be honored. After all a person' s word counts for something, no?

An example: I agree to give a person a "short time " to get back to me for a final decision. If I get no response in say 2/3 days I would make an attempt to contact him/ her and inquire as to their decision. There are some who would not do this and proceed to sell/ trade with another. Again, state your specifics and ask for same in reply. When there is either an inability or hesitation on anothers part to answer my specific inquiries, I would rather not pursue the transaction in question. Hope this is helpful.

If I do`nt have the money the seller is asking,or at least close to it,I do`nt even bother making an offer.Usually,if someone is selling a knife it`s because they want something else.Delayed gratification is something i`m not very good at and I do`nt like to impose it on others.

On a related topic I sold a very expensive knife to a newcomer to our forums on a payment plan over a 4 month period. It all worked out fine and the knife ended up in a happy new home.

Sometimes a little creative financing works to everyone's advantage as long as there is honesty and good communication on both sides of the deal.

I'm grateful that some people hold knives because I'd be screwed otherwise. One reason knives have been put aside for me is that m/o's take forever in the post from here to the States (thanks Dennis, thanks Randall). The other reason is that my greed overwhelms my finances (big thanks to Patti). Waiting sucks bigtime but I'm learning
