Opinions: Badly cut finger?

I'm with Medic on this one in that it sounds more like poor circulation than nerve damage. BTW, I hope that you've been keeping this wound covered. I gave myself a nice slice a while back on my index finger that was about half an inch long and deep to boot so I know your pain. You kind of get one of those, oh **** this is serious feelings in the pit of your stomach!
Get some medical attention,
Matt

I saw my doc today who told me there was nothing to be done other than putting a bandage back on and using anti-bacterial cream/ointment over the wound (which I had discontinued a couple of days ago). He mentioned that I should contact him if I experience any of the signs of infection:
  • Increased pain, swelling, redness, or warmth around the affected area.
  • Red streaks extending from the affected area.
  • Drainage of pus from the area.
  • Swollen lymph nodes in the neck, armpit, or groin.
  • Fever of 100°F (37.78°C) or higher.
    [/list=a]
    (of which I have none)

Other than that, I'm set to heal on my own as I've been accustomed (like that time w/ the xacto knife, or... ;))

Again, thanks for the advice and concern :)

Raden: I'm guessing you're wearing some combination of Kevlar and Spectra vest.
Spectra makes it stab resistant and the Kevlar is there for bullet resistance.

Thank God you don't have any nerve damage dude!
The symptoms you described match mine to tee. I cut nerves, vessels, tendons, and part of the bone in my right index finger two years ago on Labor Day. After 3 1/2 hours of micro-surgery they were able to re-attatch everything but the nerve repair only took partially and to this day half of my finger is still numb. The scarring on the tendon sheath has limited my ability to fully close the finger into a fist and since then no knife has really felt "right" in my grip.

I pray you have a full recovery and please be careful in the future!

All the best,
Mike U.

Sounds like we have a club here misque, I did basically the same thing. Severed artery, tendon and nerve in my right index at the joint and severed artery and nerve on the middle finger just below the joint. It's been 18 months on mine. I am getting almost all of my range of motion back, and the feeling is returning. I think the worst part is how the feeling comes back. It goes in cycles. It will get to almost normal and then it seems to reverse itself for a while. Then as it comes back, there are spots that are extremely sensitive to light touch. My surgeon told me to keep working my grip and range of motion, if I did this, would keep breaking up the adhesion and abrade the scar tissue. This would help a lot with range of motion. When I asked about the nerves, he couldn't give me a solid answer. He said regeneration was about 1/4" month if I remember correctly, but the issue was how quickly the body began to fully utilize the nerves. He said some people get it back very quickly, others can take years of slow progress.
