Opinions needed: The Big Boys. XL's and other pocket swords..

Yeah I REALLY wish they did a thumb plate on the Voyager and Hold Out series...that way I wouldn't have to use so many Zip-Ties on my blades! ;)

I don't see how these knives are "pointless" at all. I was watching the Nutnfancy review of the Talwar and I was shocked to hear that someone from an unnamed knife manufacturer also dismissed the giant folders as something "they'll never do," dismissing them like some kind of bad joke. Cold Steel is the only one doing anything like these, and that's a shame.

I don't see how anyone could consider a smaller knife better for self-defense. I have a little slip-joint I use for utility purposes and I certainly can't ever remember needing a 4" knife for utility. A huge number of people carry 4" folders for self-defense, even if they feel awkward admitting it. So how is that better than a 6" Hold Out. It just isn't.

Other knife makers are stupid for not seeing the opportunity to create more market size. The fact is, as long as Cold Steel is the only one making these, only so many people will "get it" and buy one. If any one or two of Kershaw, ZT, Benchmade, Spyderco, Gerber, SOG etc. made them as well, there would be tens of thousands of more people that needed one immediately. Not long after people got over the novelty of the bigger folders, we'd all realize how dogmatic we had been for decades just limiting ourselves to 4" folders when bigger ones are so much better.

I mean, what are those other companies going to do? Make another 4" tactical folder?

Jeffright, some people are just retarded. Putting down big knives makes them feel superior. It is a way of compensating for their insecurity.

I freaking guarantee that the last thing anyone would ever want is a smaller knife if their life was on the line. I EDC carry a Rajah II or an Espada XL. A 4" knife is a deadly thing in the hands of a trained fighter. It can cut to the bone. That same trained fighter with a 6" Rajah II or 7.5" XL Espada will remove body parts.

Cold Steel gets it. The others don't.

Whelp this did it. Just ordered the Voyager XL tanto. I was going to wait until after the Rajah 2 but I guess the voyager will be a good one to see how I like carrying a big boy around. That Talwar is freakin mean looking too.

Great choice, I'm not much into tanto blades, but this knife is just awesome. Wait till you get it in hand, guaranteed to put on of these :D on your face. It also carries well for what it is.

BAD THREAD...BAD! .......GO LIE DOWN!!!

( thread just made me order a Hold Out 1 plain edge, Ti-lite 6 inch alum, and a XL Voyager Tanto 60/40 blade to go with my XL Vaquero and L Espada....next on the list, Rajah II Blackout )

You will love the Rajah II. My interests are completely self defense. A Rajah II or XL Espada may actually stop a situation before it gets out of hand. Seeing a 6" - 7.5" blade deployed COULD make a person reconsider their actions. I would NEVER count on this. But, it is a factor.

Against a bad guy, you are fighting two battles - physical and psychological. People underestimate a 3-4" blade because they are so common. Although it should intimidate a bad guy. It may not. Not many people underestimate a 6" Rajah II or 7.5" XL Espada. Everyone I have ever shown my XL Espada to is dumbfounded. Their jaw opens, they babble a few things, laugh uncomfortably a little, and then ask if it is legal.

A big knife is a game changer. It may make the bad guy poop his pants and stop what he is doing. If it doesn't, you have a 6"-7.5" knife in your hands. Game on.

=o( I'm weak....went ahead and ordered the Rajah II Blackout this morning.....that makes 4 CS XL folders in 24 hours...to go with my other 2....gonna have more money in my knife collection than I do my gun collection at this rate, and my gun collection is.....impressive

I agree 100%. Those same people that claim carrying a large knife or any knife for SD reasons is somehow silly are the ones using their Emerson commanders exclusively for spreading butter on toast, and maybe slicing an apple or two. I have always carried a knife for SD purposes first and foremost, and daily cutting tasks second.

I would consider the Rajah 2 the 12 gauge shotgun of the knife world. Going with what you said, 10 on the intimidation scale, 10 on the damage scale (God forbid), plus minimal training is needed to effectively operate it under pressure. And I gotta say it, hopefully I would never ever have to test this theory.

Ya, the same as most, I have a pile of very large Cold Steel. But my Rajah 2 never loses its wow factor. If I wasn't into multi tools and Swiss Army knives, I would find it hard to generate interest for sub four inch folders.

Sweet XL collection you've got going there. The Hold Out 1 blade is a thing of beauty for us XL fans, with it's FFG and distal taper.

XL Clip Point Recon 1 here, I have wanted a Raja for a while, they're killer knives. I definitely not a great "EDC" blade

Yep. Clip point Recon 1 XL. I've had the big Voyagers and Talwar XL. The Recon 1 XL has the most comfortable handle IMO. Very stout, laughably huge, still fits easy in a pocket. Love it.

just wish they were not so heavily textured, even the Voyagers destroy my pockets.... if I had to fault Cold Steel on ONE thing, it would be that......

Meh, just sand it behind the clip. It doesn't take much work to break that g10 a little. I'd rather have more grip than less, but it IS a pain when they eat your pockets.

What I carry and when, from bottom left to top right:

Work, work, formal, play

Proud owner of a Rajah II, Spartan and a large Espada myself. I carry the Spartan the most because it's the smallest and I'd rather not get in trouble if I can avoid it. If the laws were different, I'd carry my big ol' beasties on a daily.
