Just ordered a Midnight Hideaway Straight in S30V with the black DLC coating. Seems like a really cool idea, so I plopped down some cash and ordered it today. Hope it gets here quick, I've got some oranges to whack out. What do others on the list think about this "system"?

Very well designed and well made, more effective than you might think such a small item would be. Your hand becomes the handle. I think you'll like yours. You sure started with an elegant version! :D

Fantastic blade. Fills a niche in my EDC rotation that nothing else does.

Have the Straight Strider S30V NF model with tiger stripe finish and had the handle paracord wrapped.

My ex girlfriend (who is also a martial artist) liked it so much she ordered two.

For me personally, I wouldn't carry such a small blade for defensive use; that's just me, plenty of people feel fine with it. Illegal to carry a fixed blade here anyway, so the question is moot for me. I still picked up a HAK though, for utility use, and think it's great. What I like about it is that I can go into teh garage or out to the garden or whatever, cut what I want, then just open my hand up and manipulate the material or plant (the HAK just hangs on my fingers by the capsule) with both hands, then close my hand to cut again. I think it's a brilliant utility knife solution!

They're awesome. I have 2 Strider S30V straights and a Brock Ti straight. Always a Strider HAK around my neck. Best little knife I've come across. I don't have them for SD but they would work muck better to punch with than to swing/slice with for that purpose. At least the straight ones lend themselves well to punching with. I just know that I couldn't carry anything bigger around my neck, but the HAK doesn't leave you wanting more handle to grab. It locks on. Since it's cold here now, I have the Ti version on my jacket pocket's key static cord thing. I swear it's made for it.

I have a black Strider Sting as well.
It is a very versatile utility knife that seems to get better over time.
It is also delightful as an off gun hand carry, especially when paired with a tactical flashlight.

I would LOVE to own a HAK!! Congrats!! You got yourself an awesome, awesome knife!

I have the economy model. It's outstanding (straight edge, stonewash finish in 440C). Holds a good edge and easy to wear unnoticed. I cut myself a few times, once somewhat deply, fussing with the holster and unconventional draws. I almost never cut myself, so this indicates that messing about with the hideaway is a particularly stupid thing to do. Agree with comments about it being a really outstanding off-hand knife for handgun retention or use with a tactical light, although the time taken to "suit up" with knife, gun, flashlight makes the outfit not so tactical for a CCW user.

I will probably get another one (claw design) for carry, and keep the straight edge concealed in my car. Service from FrontSight was absolutely outstanding, given the wait that you're informed of up-front.

Two thumbs (one bleeding) up!

One more thing. Very much to my own surprise, I discovered that I like it a lot more cordwrapped.

Same here. One of mine would be a little too big so I have it double wrapped, and it's my favourite one. I use it for EDC neck purposes instead of the other 2 that fit properly (1 layer halfway around the handle). You can put a lot more force into cuts and just as easy to grab since it was too big to start with. I'd post a pic of them if I could.

I'm watching the yellow dot at custom sheathing right now, so I don't have much longer to wait for my Midnight HAK Straight, and I was going to ask if any of you had any preferences about where you carry your HAK? I ordered most of the sheaths, and the dvd also, but I was wondering about stong side carry with my Glock, and weakside carry behind my minimag. After looking around the web for a bit, people seem to be impressed with the product, and I can't wait to see that big ole brown van pull up in the yard. I sharpen my knives with the Lansky system, and I was wondering how I could sharpen one of those claws. Any suggestions? Impatient in East Texas, understanding that the order will get here soon enough.

Not a lot of edge to sharpen. :) Get a dogbone ceramic like the GatCo Tri-Seps, and you'll do fine. Unless you're planning on eviscerating dragons frequently, then I'd suggest a slim diamond rod like the Mission sharpener.

When you get it, try it out everywhere, till you see what works for you. Personally, I like a small fixed blade weakside, just to the left of my belt buckle. But if you're used to going strongside for a pistol, the HAK might feel more natural right behind that. I like it as a necker because it is so minimal, it doesn't drag. Biut it does move around a lot.

Love mine. It is on my keychain, and I carry my keys to the car with my fingers in the hole. I use it all the time for little cutting tasks. I think fixed blades are illegal here, but have never had a problem. Went into a federal building by mistake with it, the guard thought it was super cool and let me into the building with it. My friend who is a cop said he didn't even think about it as a fixed blade, and figured nobody he knew on the force would either. I would buy it again in a heartbeat. Josh
