Opinions of the Gerber Mark II

I have one, just because of it's "mean" looks. Great to display on my knife cabinet, but that's about it. It's definitively not a practical knife.

Here is a picture of my 1973 Mark II.

No cant on this one but the old Cutlery Shoppe versions did. I wish Loffer would get with Gerber and start offering those models again. They would be a big hit. They go for big money on e-bay.

I gave a friend a pickup load of cedar fence posts I did not need. When I got to her horse and cattle ranch and unloaded the posts I got a tour of the operation. In the barn was a stack of many tons of hay. Sticking out of a bail was a Gerber MarkII. When I asked about it she said it had been used for many years to cut the twine that holds the bails together. Said it was the best knife she ever had for the job!

I have had two of these knives over the years and loved both of them dearly .

on was an 80s ss with no wasp to the blade, it was stolen from my house while I was living elsewhere

the second was an original grey handle canted wasp blade made of l6 tool steel ,I lost that and a mark1 in a bad ebay auction for 180 bucks(for both)

I miss them dearly and hopefully will be picking up one like D R Es soon

The Gerber Mark I, Mark II & Tac II are without a doubt some of my all time favorite knives. They are intimidating and wickedly effective...

They are intimidating and wickedly effective...

Effective at doing what, exactly?

I sold mine and don't regret it for an instant. They're some of the most beautiful production blades ever made as far as I'm concerned. Their beauty is rivaled only by their uselessness, imho.

They are killing knives. For that, they could be effective....

I bought one of the new ones, I always wanted one as a kid, and couldn't justify the cost of a orginal. I brought it with me on deployment, because what else are you going to do with one. It's to long to go on my IOTV comfortably, It flops around if worn on my leg. It stays in my B hut, I use it to open mail from home. When I get home I am going to write a letter about how it went to "War" along with a photo of myself with it. . I'm going to put it on EBay and sell it as a valuable collectable, and buy a "real" one with the proceeds. :)

Like Ankerson said, they're purpose built knives.

I've seen a few nice wood boxed MKI / MKII combo sets with polished blades, wood handles, and engraved bolsters. Pete Gerber himself signed the authenticity cards. Very cool older sets.

The old cats tongue handles with the wasp blade have always been desirable pieces, thanks for sharing the pics guys.

andy thanks for jogging my memory about the guy carrying the head in bag. it made national news ,was in germany i think. i've had a coupal of these knives & quality was real good. i believe early ones were l6 tool steel , later they went to 440c. when they were released in 70s one needs to realize that knifes of this type were relatively rare since the "tact" craze had'nt swept the nation. vietman soldiers bought them by the thousands simply because outside of the ka-bar killing knives were not in vogue. future makers brought out a flood of better designed knives but gerber was on scene very early.after all these yrs. i have came back to the d2 ka-bar as the b.o.b. choice.
