Opinions of the Victorinox package opener tool?

I'm giving up on my dream of having a couple of custom Victorinox 93 mm Alox knives, and now I'm thinking I might get a new Companion Slim Alox for EDC, but I'm a little put off by the new package opener tool. Although I will still carry my usual Victorinox Rambler, I'd really much rather have any of the 93 mm small knife blades than the package tool, but at least it does have the flat Phillips driver on the end. Who here has got one of the new Victorinox models with the package tool, and what has been your experience of it, so far?

I’ve had a Companion since they came out, and the package opener sees a lot more use than the can opener did for me. Works really well for getting into packages without gunking up the blade of your knife. First world problem, sure. But I’m a fan 😀

Have one of the slim alox ones that lives in the car too.

I have (2) Companion Slim Alox, and I love them. I cannot have a blade at work, and the Companion Slim Alox is what I carry daily at work. The package opener works great! Well enough that I only use it to open packages at home.

It was designed for airline travel.
Based on online reports, TSA will still take it away.
Thats to say, some airports don’t allow any scissors, regardless of size.

It will never replace any of my vics for edc.
The blade(s) does everything that package opener does and so much more.

That's what I use my secondary blade for.

I really really don't understand how so many people get cut on clamshell packaging or why it's considered tough to open.
I don't know if people are trying to cut around the entire perimeter instead of carefully around the item itself, but I've never had a problem with the stuff or cut myself while opening it.

The can opener is a wonderful tape cutter
Its a purpose built tool that is, like i said (my opinion) is useless. I did use it on a few packages, gets gummed up pretty quick

The Companion has been my go-to since the limited edition was first released. I may be in the minority here but I actually dig the package opener, not so much for boxes but for clamshell packaging. The real benefit of the Companion for me though is finally having the fingernail file and scissors together on a larger SAK. I previously carried the Wenger Traveller alot, and the Wenger can opener can work well as a package opener tool too, but I'm not a fan of the Wenger scissors. Truth be told, I carry enough blades on me that a dedicated package opener is a welcome edition

What happens when it gets dull ? I have the companion and its cool but i would rather have a small blade and lets not talk about the Pen in it (love its idea but they naw function if wet.)

I don't like it. I use the can opener from time to time, both for its intended purpose and as a scraper, etc. I can open packages with the blade. If I'm losing the can opener, I'd rather get something like an in-line Phillips or a sheepsfoot blade (like on the Electrician).

Any speculation as to why they didn't choose to use the combo bottle/can opener so they could add the new tool without losing can opening functionality? Knowing Victorinox I'm guessing something to do with scale manufacturing costs.

Also, on the topic of package opening, the pruning blade is something I'd like to see them use in more models.
