Opinions on a couple Kershaws

Don't ming being wrong. Won't be the last time. But I was just going by Kershaw's own chart. Think I'll send them an email and see what their response will be.

ThomasW monitoring all Kershaw threads, sooner or later he'll came here, I guess. But Sandvic well known steel, anyway. I hope they will start using Sandvic 19C27.

Thanks, Vassili.

I've done more research and I find nothing that indicates Sandvik 13C26 is anything more than a mediocre grade steel. It similar to AUS-6, which I have never liked. AUS-6 does not hold an edge worth a darn and I'll never own another knife made from it (unless it's just a work knife). In my experience, I find that 440A is a better performer than AUS-6.

But since I don't have anything made of Sandvik 13C26, I can't do any comparisons. The prices on the knives (fairly inexpensive) made from this steel reflect its low level of quality. Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe what I read is incorrect (don't think so), but I tend to believe it at this point. A reply from Kershaw would be nice. A nicely designed knife like the Cyclone deserves at least AUS-8.

But in the end, what really count is if you like it. A poster above says he loves his new Rainbow Leek from Amazon and I think that's great. I'm sort of a "steel snob" but I still know what really matters: do you like the knife?

Everyone is different, and thank God (or whatever you call it) for that.

Well I did some researches before and also have some knives. So may be if you do more ressearches you'll move your rating further - so far from 420 to AUS6 is pretty good progress...

Again - my opinion Sandvic is best in steel with C < 1%.

I know that at least one of creators of KaBar NG was very emotional about KaBar start making NG out of 440A (it was Sandvic 12C27, which has bit less Carbon). Absense of S and P make huge difference The reason why it is inexpensive may be due to some sweet deal Kershaw have with manufacturers, may be this is promotional price - have no Idea.

Like for example Russian knives from RosArms having best Soviet 110X18MSH steel - ball bearing stainless (20 years warranty for bearing - heart about MIGa and SU) - american ball bearing stainless is BG-42. And 110X18MSHD is also treated by Vacuum Arc Remeltng and Electro SLug Remelting (BG-42 is only VARed). But they just came to US market and selling this knives like they are made out of 440A or AUS-6 or something - similar BG-42 knives will cost 4 times.

So low price does not show always poor quality, this Sandvic is relatively unknown steel here - many does not know real value of it - like you. I think Cyclone deserve something more then AUS-8 - Sandvic at least.

Thanks, Vassili.

Price of the raw materials is only one of the innumerable factors that eventually affect retail pricing. There are bargains out there if you KNOW what to look for... expensive doesn't = better. If that were true Dark Ops knives would be more popular around here  .

Sorry for the delayed response on this one, I am out of town for a few days.

bladeprince, we like 13C26 quite a bit and will continue to use it regularly with multiple sku's. It brings a real value to production knives IMHO.
I have used it personally, and I don't think it sucks one bit. FYI, 13C26 continually tallies out at 59 (sorry about the site being inaccurate).
Maybe you will have a chance to try it sometime, it may surprise you.

Vassili, we will have to see about the 19C27, I'll check into it.
