Hello all!

I am looking for thoughts and opinions on a knife I just finished making. Its designed to be a utility knife/outdoors knife. I wanted it to be simple and comfortable, which is why the handle is a minimalistic design. The specs are:

Blade Length: 3.8"
Handle Length: 4.5"
Overall: 8.3"
Blade Thickness: 9/64
Steel: O1 Tool Steel
Handle Material: Arizona Desert Ironwood Burl
Grind: Scandinavian

Sorry about the bad photos, my nice camera is out of commission right now. I am just stuck with an ipad.

Is the design too simple? What are you thoughts on the blade profile? Does the handle need to be less minimalistic? Don't worry, you wont hurt my feelings. I am looking for feedback!

Thanks again guys!

You might wanna post this over at Shop Talk...

As for the knife, it looks pretty good. It would probably look better if it had less straight lines. It would probably feel a little better too.

I really like the profile. Looks very versatile. the kephart point makes it useful for a lot of different things.

I think it would be more comfortable if you rounded off the edges in that finger notch. Start contouring it, and just keep contouring until it feels comfortable.

Thank you for the feedback! I have a question, when you guys design handles do you design around the dominate hand? Or do you design handles to stay comfortable in both? I feel like there would be a balancing act if you designed for both. Perhaps I am thinking about this too hard?

Good question. I never thought about it much. I just automatically contour for my dominant hand, but I make the contouring symmetrical, so I think it would be equally comfortable for either hand.

Yes you can contour for handedness, but this is not common, except in high end kitchen knives.

Pretty wood.

I'm not a big fan of scandi grinds, so i won't comment about the blade.

Looks really good for a first knife. The finish on the handle looks good as far as I can see. The finish on the blade still appears to have a lot of low grit scratches in it. There is nothing wrong with that, but on the next one you might want to hand sand it going with the length of the blade. But all that is cosmetic. How does it cut and hold an edge? That is the important part.

Great work, I suggest you go make another, and most of all have fun and experiment.
