opinions on and questions about the vic farmer

I got my Farmer based on a lot of comments by other forumites. I never liked Alox handles....until it arrived. This is one sturdy knife! A little bigger than my other Vic's (huntsman, etc.), big sturdy blade, and a very good wood saw, which I've tested on a lot of wood!

This is an excellent sturdy knife to slip into your pocket when you are headed out the door.

I just got back from a weekend survival course with John mccaan from survival resources gave me a chance to break in my vic farmer which i bought based on the reviews from other folks here...Low and behold when I took it out I realized he was sporting the same model...This is a real solid sak rugged as the day is long the blade is sharp and the saw3 and awl do what it's supposed to...and ideal wilderness blade.

newbie at woodworking question:

I've only used an awl for leatherwork. What is it used for on wood?

I just got the new SMKW catalog. I going to check out felinevet & amazon tonight. Thanks

I use it to cut pieces of magnisium and for scraping on
a fire steel. That way I keep the blade sharp.

I also use it to take out staples.

I think the SAK Farmer is a great knife, especially for outdoor use. However, if your using a knife for EDC at work (office, lab etc.) IMO a Victorinox Compact is more useful. If your day to day activities are mostly outdoors or in the trades such as a carpenter then get the SAK farmer. Camping/hiking etc. get the Farmer. Better yet get both!:)
I carry a Compact and a Farmer. My town and country combo, lol!
I love both but i carry the compact as well because i tend to use the scissors a lot more than the saw and i like the corkscrew (it holds the micro-screwdriver).
If scissors aren't a necessity then buy the Farmer.
Its built like a tank and is the best bang for the buck of any Vic! Try felinevet on Ebay and at Sosak.
If you don't need scissors or a saw then buy a pioneer/soldier.
And the celidor Vic models are actually pretty tough too.
I really really wish Vic would made an Alox Huntsman!
That would be the best of both worlds.
Hmmm an Alox Outrider with a one hand opening blade would be great as well!
:)

I always wanted a Farmer ever since I saw Ted Nugent in the Blade magazine feature"the knife I carry". His knife of choice was the farmer. Shortly after that, they quit making them and apparently Ted bought the last ten thousand or so and marketed them through his american whackmaster catalog. I am not sure if that is true or not ,but I am keeping my eyes out for a farmer with a black cross on it. PS I now have two farmers, ordered one when they started remaking them and accidentaly picked one up way too cheap in an engraving store

There is no better knife for the price than The Vic. SAKS. I have the basic Soldier model, Huntsman, Executive and many more models. The blades are tight and they come sharp and are easy to sharpen and the saws are great cutters. The awl can be used to start a hole for a screw or to punch holes in leather. The can opener work as well as the bottle opener. Can't go wrong with the SAK.
