Opinions on BM 630 Skirmish sought

Only you can decide what knife to spend your cash on.
I never buy any smaller knife first as long as there's a bigger model of the same type to be had.
Genrally the larger model is always worth more when and if they are discontinued. Plus, I just prefer larger folders in general, as I like to carry when hiking and that's always in a belt sheath so the size doesn't matter.
So, if it was me I'd buy the big boy first. But, it's not me it's you and your money.

I bought one from the Cutlerry Shoppe in 2005. It is one of their limited editions with no finish on the handle, just plain titanium. It came out of the box razor sharp, and is a really nice knife.
It is only second to my large Rukus.

Off all things, they had the lowest price on the Skirmishes when I bought mine about a year + ago. I paid $170, delivered, for my plain 630 from them, online.

Here are some fresh pictures of the Skirmish 630 compared to my Spyderco JD Smith which is what I was carrying today. A couple of in hand comparisons too. I'm sorry all I had was the JD Smith with me. I know it's an unusual comparitor . . .

The Skirmish has been discontinued and has started to go up in price.

Why, why, why didn't I buy one this time last year when I could have got one?

Answer: because I think too much and don't act quick enough ...same thing happened with the Rijback too ...:grumpy:

i have had a couple of skirmish's and they are a good knife, the week i got my 1st one i also got a spydie Ti ATR and i ended up liking it a lot more, but nothing wrong with the skirmish either, imho is the only con is the pocket clip is kinda cheesy.

I'll likely open the store up this AM and pick up that 635BK. I still am interested in the 630 - and I will keep searching for a source. One knife store has one at $190 + s/h - I may end up there, as they are scarce now. I do have one nagging problem - started by my wife's viewing the first picture and saying, "How cute... it's got little colored beads on it!". Well, I thought it was the lighting hitting drilled holes - but the colors seem to follow the knife, no matter the lighting. What are those colored dots??

I appreciate the info, opinions, and suggestions. I really don't need assistance in spending my money... I do a masterful job alone. I really I guess I just wanted comments like; "Closest thing to a Sebbie", "Best thing since sliced bread.", etc. I like Benchmades - I just haven't had the best luck with my new ones being sharp. Certainly, the sample my dealer had was sharp. I guess I was just afraid I might like it too much - another brand to lust after. Hopefully, the desire for one 'finely made knife' will be satiated by this example... for a while...

Here are some better size comparison pictures. It's between the large Skirmish and my EDC today, my G10, S30V Millie. There is a width/thickness difference for the most part but it's minimal to a degree. I think the biggest difference in practical terms is the width of the blade profiles (significant win for the Millie) and the weight (significant win for the Millie) and the Millie is thinner overall by about a 1/16" or less which is insignificant. My guess is the Skirmish is going to the the stronger knife of the two overall if you were inclined to use your knife for things not typically conducive for EDC but I have never really tried to destroy either knife so that is a purely unscientific assumption. Obviously though, you would expect the Skirmish blade to endure much more abuse due to it's shear thickness and the grind. I suspect a large part of the weight difference is between the blades too:

You can always look at the BM630's brother, the ZT300.

They could easily have been from the same designer.

Postscript:

I was there within minutes of the opening. I had my Spydie Native in one front pocket, a Vic Alox Farmer SAK in one back pocket, and a recent Kershaw JYDII CB in the other. The 635BK was nice - but it just didn't grab me. Given the mini Skirmish as a swap for one of my pocketed knives, I wouldn't do it. The salesman, a friend, realized it, too... it just wasn't for me. Sure, I could say it had the finish off on the edge - wear marks on the clip - looked used. That would be nitpicking - it just wasn't 'me'. I'm betting the black blade pre-disposed me to not being it's greatest champion. I left with my cash still in my wallet.

Things always work out for the best - Someone Else is always at the helm. I got home to receive a call from my little brother across town. He, a university librarian, had just been reduced to 32 hours/week due to their worsening budget outlooks... and his wife, who worked in a jewelry store, had just learned she had been laid off. I think they can probably find better use for my mad moola.

PS Hmmm, my CCs are paid-off... I could order a 630...

I just bought one used on the forums, and this is an extremely nice knife. It was bigger than I really thought it would be, but that's fine as weight isn't an issue for me. Honestly if you are interested in this knife, I wouldn't hesitate to get it.

EDIT: Please remember that the knife is a recurve, and for some people (myself included), recurves are harder to sharpen.

The 630 is a sweet knife and a keeper for me.I had the smaller version but the grip seemed too short for me.Traded it away.

I have a skirmish in my pocket right now. It is the best knife I have ever held in my hand. The blade is crazy, it really thick at the spine. The blade is perfectly balanced with the handle. I bought it as a collectors piece, but it was a shame to let such powerful knife languish away in my knife drawer.

It is super sharp out of the box, and it is still sharp after months hacking cardboard scrap wood anything else I pit against it. It is good looking knife, but it is as hardcore as anything else out there.

The skirmish is a little like female MMA star Gina Carano, really beautiful and really kick-ass.
