I have loved knives since I was a kid and just recently discovered this great site. I am considering buying this knife with the Xytel handle. I would probably use it for frequent carry and miscellaneous cutting tasks. What are your opinions of this knife? I have seen this knife priced in the mid $30's range. Is there a better knife in this price category? Thanks.

CRKT makes good knives for the money, and the Zytel M-16 is certainly a good knife. The Zytel M-16's come in spear point and a smaller tanto version in AUS-6 steel.

Welcome to the forums!

I think the CRK&T M16-Z models are decent folders and certainly a bargain (especially because of the great Kit Carson design including the flipper) assuming that you don’t need a good edge holding blade steel and that you have the possibility to test the lock mechanism before you buy the folder.
I myself never have had any problems with the CRK&T liner locks but some members have reported about malfunctions.

I purchased 2 M16's M's with the 1* logo. The design of Kit Carson is excellent and the reproduction by CRKT is very good. Now I just have to wait for Kit to make an M16 for me! -Dick

The nice thing about the flipper-model M16s is that even if the liner did fail, the flipper would stop the blade from hurting you.

I liked mine so much I had Gary Graley make a horizontal leather belt sheath for it:

I'm happy with my M16-10F carbon fiber. It locks up nice and tight right in the middle of the blade tang. It sharpens quickly and easily. The CF handle does flex a slight amount, which probably isn't a problem with the Zytel.

For the money these knives are great!

I own 2, an M16-03 zytel and until last week a M16-04 Tanto.

The sad part is I have managed to lose the M16-04.

I am just now start to stop crying!!!!

I dont have experience with the M16 Series, but I am extremely pleased with my CRKT Mirage. I'm not sure if they make this one any more, I didn't see it at their site last time I looked.

Certainly a well thought out collaboration, and a good price tag!! I've beaten a couple of them DEATH, but they do take a good amount of abuse for an EDC that's gonna be heavily used.

Nice Sheath you got from Gary RAZOREDJ...very cool!

Very nice design and execution, two sizes to choose - compact and full-sized. Powerful knives, I would dare to say there are all M16 ideas in highly refined form.

I have an aluminum handled spear point. It seems to be very strong, however, it is a little too big and heavy for my personal preferance. I use the large Urban Shark for my EDC.

I have medium sized one (spear point), it's handle is built of pretty thick carbon fiber and is not flexible at all.

Bought one for a friend recently and spent a day going over it to make sure it worked ;)

The example I got was very well made, easily matching knives costing 3 times the price. Nice rounded edges and corners on the handles and a very good edge on the blade. Knife feels very comfortable in the hand and locked up precisely. Blade rests dead center of the blade (yay!) when closed. I would have bought one for myself if it came with a drop point blade like those on Carson's custom versions. Cost me $32 from an online dealer. For that money I would be hard pressed to name a better made knife.

I have an M16-13Z, and I love it. It's a good way to get to know someone better; flick it and they invariably want to see it. Of course, I wouldn't recommend doing that around sheeple, but since I don't, I haven't had problems.

The knife itself is well-made. I remember a few people here (Razor, for one) saying they had to lube the pivots before it would flick right, but I haven't had to do that at all. The lockup is solid and nothing is loose. I did lose the middle pocket clip screw a while back, but I tightened the others with Loctite and they are still good to go. The edge holding ability isn't fantastic, but it does take an edge well, so it's easy to sharpen.

I recommend you buy the knife; I'd personally go for the spear point half se , but that's just me.

IMHO the M16 at around $30.00 is one of the biggest bargains in the knife industry. This is a very good knife and many that cost far more are not nearly as good. CRKT are a fine company that is giving us good knives at excellent prices and they have very good customer service as well. What more could be asked of them?
