Gwinnydapoo has just said exactly what I have tried to hint at with some earlier posts. Some of us don't have cash flow like others do, and, quite frankly, I almost resent people who can afford to spend $300 on what amounts to a few pieces of steel and synthetic. Don't get me wrong, I love performance knives and the work of a master smith is nothing short of art, but that is exactly what it is : art. It just isn't practical to use knives like that as tools.
This is where Cold Steel comes in. As has been previously mentioned, Cold Steel makes knives that are of great quality for the price, and unlike other knives (read SWAT or Colt or United) in their price range, I don't feel like my Gunsite will break if I use it. Nor would I feel destraught if I lost or (impossible) BROKE it.
The comparison is kind of like comparing a Ferrari and a Mustang. Both are good performers, but they can't really be grouped together. Lots of us fantasize about, and appreciate the craftsmanship of, Ferraris, but I'll never have one in my garage.
