Opinions on Modded CRK knives

I bought a small 31 off someone and it has a stonewashed blade. Which voids the warranty. The handle has some discoloration on it, which makes me wonder if they did something to it. Anyone ever seen spots on titanium handles? Wondering if it was modded or just really dirty and if CRK would still warranty the handle.

Anyway just looking for opinions, trying to decide if I want to just flip it and buy another small with the warranty intact.

What do you all think?

You should post a picture of what you're seeing. It's tough but not impossible to discolour Ti.

Here's the front side with the spots, but the lock side doesn't seem to have any noticeable discoloration.

I might just move it along. Which is a little silly, I don't really use the spa ever, but having the option is nice.

Keep it, beat it, love it. The current value of it probably won't change, so why not get some milage out of it first? Hard to tell whats happening in the photo, but I'd take it apart and clean it up really well.

Personally I don’t let the warranty limit me. I have a Spydie hole on my large 31 and I love it. To me the risk was worth the reward. I have never needed to use a warranty on a knife... but I have used the “spa treatment” at CRK. However, spa treatments aren’t all that necessary.
My opinion is that if not having a warranty will always leave a dark cloud of uncertainty lingering over your head, move along and get one that hasn’t been modded.

It just has some odd discoloration spots on it that even a light cleaning won't remove. But once it starts getting used I suspect you won't be able to tell at all.
And yeah I know the value won't really be effect. Just trying to decide. Figured I'd ask for opinions from the experts.

I have other knives to mod so I leave my CRKs alone, but to each their own! I am not sure what that person was trying to do but as mentioned above you have a nice user now with no worries about messing it up.

I am not inclined to modify CRK knives but if you paid money for it then you are free to do whatever you want with it.
If the blade finish and spots on the scales bother you that much then move it down the road.

I definitely got it for a good price, just about the cheapest I've bought a CRK. The WD40 isn't a bad idea. Honestly the blade was done pretty good, they protect the appropriate parts when they acid washed it. I'm just not quite sure about the handle. It's almost like they started darkening with oxiclean but gave up as quickly as they started just leaving a few splotches. Or maybe the had some residue from something on their hands? I'm not sure.

Last question, does a blade mod nix the entire warranty from CRK or would they theoretical spa the handle still? I sent them an email already we'll see what they say.

Yeah I'm of the same inclination. I personally wouldn't mod one. But it was a pretty good deal. But looking at it sets my teeth on edge a little. Haha I'll give it a week or two and see if it grows on me.

A few mods can be good for the user. This Regular has been anodized, gotten a new clip, had the tip reshaped to a clip point, had the blade steel type engraved on the blade, and had the lanyard hole enlarged to accept a push pin lanyard.View attachment 1476941

Try WD-40 or Windex.

Some mods look cool but I would never buy anyone's spydie hole or anodized CRK they're just not for me.

Best to ask your warranty question directly to CRK. I read on the Facebook page if you void warranty on one part of the knife it's void on the whole knife which I don't personally agree with. That's like saying putting aftermarket exhaust on your car voids the corrosion warranty.

I like 'em the way they left the factory. I tend to like vintage stuff and I'm always a bit saddened to see when someone's cool old Chevy truck, Martin guitar, Pre '64 Winchester, etc, etc, etc, and yes, CRK, has been altered from original. Another factor to consider when modifying an icon--you are altering it to suit the particular tastes of the one person who will never buy it.

I recently got a "Spyderco" Mangear Moded Inkosi. Started with Spydercos as my first non slip joints long ago, and just wanted to see ... It's ok, took a little getting used to the opening, like an Umnumzaan takes getting used to... I do like it, but don't see it as an improvement on the CRK thumb stud.It was about as well done as could be, and had no ill effect on the rest of how the knife functions.

I would probably contact CRK and let them know what all was done to the knife to be sure if anything is covered or not.

One of the reasons that I buy CRK is the after sale service so I value that. Others may not.
