Opinions on pants

I am wondering what every ones opinion are on tactical pants or BDUs. What company offers the best value and comfort. Also what brands of pants seem to resist dirt and stains.

Well, I just use used ones from the surplus store, but I think I want to get some solid brown or grey ones next time, so I am interested to hear the responses too.

I'm a fan of them for there durability and price. I sometimes shy away from them depending where I will be because of sheeple. Surplus store for me. I usually stick with woodland camo, they seem to hide stains pretty well. I was gonna dry some OD ones I saw in the store but they were twice the price of the regular ones.
 
I like the 5.11/royal robin type....but for the money it's hard to beat bdu pants from the surplus store.

A plus for the 5.11 that they are made with a knee pad insert slot (the pads are extra $). Saved my poor knees at the firearms range many a day.
 
I got two used pairs of the issue ACU pants, and like them a lot. I also get outdoor clothes at Ross and other discount stores. Just picked up some nice khaki pants on clearance for $5. Also got a Royal Robins long sleeve for $10, those stores are great for that. i wear shorts quite a bit hiking too.
 
I always wear Wranglers. It doesing matter if I am fishing, hiking, camping, canoeing, or mountain biking I am always wearing jeans. I don't even own a pair of shorts and I live in SC. I do wear BDUs when hunting and paintballing though.
 
I am a pants snob, I like Prana climbing pants the most. Get them at REI. They are pricey but out last 4 pairs of jeans to 1 pair of Prana, so I think they are more cost effective.
 
I am still looking for the perfect "woods" pants. Jeans are durable, comfortable, and cheap - but cotton can kill you!

I've tried several versions of synthetic outdoors pants, usually some form of cargo pant. They all seem too fragile, not stretchy enough, and figgin' expensive!

The search continues for a non-cotton outdoor pant. I've been hunting the early season (September) in camo jeans, with my raingear along for the ride. It I know it is going to be rainy all day, I'll just wear the rain pants over my long UW. If it's cooler, I may throw a fleece layer in there. Hopefully I'll find a suitable replacement before this season.

Advice on pants? Put them on one leg at a time.

I like military BDU's for general woodsbumming but opt for non-military looking pants like Carhartts for more of a sheeple friendly appearance. I would rather fly under the radar than look like a tough guy that will raise suspicion. I also prefer neutral colors in the woods to lots of bright colors that stand out.

They also probably are protective against "blue flame backdraft!" :D

The blue daggers I throw don't backdraft. They are swift and single directional.
 
I have several pairs of the basic 5.11 Tactical pants. I bought them in netural tans and grays and don't look any different than most cargo pants out there. They are 100% cotton but I wear them around town and at work. I do a lot of soldering so I will not wear nylon at work for fear of melting my pants to my body (lap). They also come with pockets for knee pads. They also have a nylon version and recently added a poly/cotton version. I did recently pick up two pairs of the TDUs for SAR use but have not tried them out yet. The are 656% poly and 35% cotton and are Teflon treated for stain resistance. I am wearing the green pair paintballing this weekend so I will post and let everyone know what my impressions are when I get back. I get mine through LA Police Gear as the are $10 cheaper than anywhere else and each pair of TDUs come with knee pads so no need to spend more for them. Keep your eyes open as they usually run specials and you can get free shipping. kneepads etc...
 
You know I'm glad this topic came up (pants I mean.) I was going to start a thread about pants myself.

I have winter pants that are GREAT. The brand is Thermo-King, they are a heavy wool pant, great for Canadian winters. In fact I believe they are made in Canada.

But I don't have pants I really LIKE for summer.

I generally wear a pair of wool/poly military dress pants. They are tough and dark green and the material is good for a bush pant but they don't really thrill me for either high-output activites like climbing or for the middle of summer.

I was really thinking about getting some 5.11 type pants but the thing that always holds me back is the flimsy synthetic feel. How tough are they compared to denim, for instance? Obviously cotton is lousy but denim is pretty comfy and durable. I need something like denim, but that doesn't try to assassinate me any time it rains.


Come on experts, what should I do? How do you feel about the cotton/poly blends that BDUs are made of? I always feel like they are only one step removed from straight cotton so I hold back. Should I?


This is an area where I could really use some guidance.
 
I get the Propper BDUs in solid colors - same stitching, materials, and design as the issue pants. Made in the USA, and relatively cheap. The main fabric holds up well, but I wear out the top pockets. I'm not sure the poly/cotton blend is the best around flame.
 
mil surp bdu's are good for general bumming around, the proppers are very comfortable and hold up very well.
 
Carhartts and the newish Riggs brand I believe from Wrangler.
