Opinions on Pinched Bolsters

I didn't realize that ones with a slight bevel like Vince posted were considered pinched as well. I don't mind that at all. The type that have a concave shape are the kind that bug me. It's also interesting to learn how you make them Todd. If you're only half crazy that's still better than some of us around here.:D

Dan,that "concave" style pinch, you speak of,it is def. an English style.
If you look at old knives, you'll see that type of bolster treatment moreso on old Sheffield knives, than later built early American knives.
I think then & now,it shows a degree of skill,as even back then, and now, too, you will not see just any knifemaker doing that.
It is advanced,IMO

For me, it depends on how pinched. A flat bevel cuts some bulk and smooths out the transition from handle to blade, but I find concave pinches to be a bit much.

I do like "fancy" bolsters with the indented bands. But having the ends mashed, or "pinched", doesn't do anything for me.

See if I can 'borrow' some online pictures for the purpose of comparison:

Plain bolsters, nothing wrong with these:

Fancy bolsters, a nice touch.

Thank you for educating me, I've been learning a lot since joining bladeforums. I've looked through my knives and found out that I don't have any with pinched bolsters. Just coincidence, because I love some of the examples graciously posted. I'll be looking for one in the near future.

I like them personally. Maybe not on every knife, but definitely on some. For instance I like the pinched bolster treatments on Case's new olive green series. - Ed

Here's a Texas Jack in the olive green that Ed's talking about - with the rattail and pinched bolsters. I really like them on this knife!
