Hi
I'm considering getting either one of these. Here're what I like about both knives.

Kershaw Ricochet :-
Likes
------
Blade/handle design, especially like the finger cutouts.
CPM 440V blade (comments welcome on this steel for a working blade)
Beautiful polished G10 handles (slippery?)
Assisted opening feature
Thin blade profile
Overall good looks of this knife

Dislikes
--------
Logo on knife blade
Never owned a Kershaw knife before, so don't know how good the quality,
fit and finish is.
Liner Lock (Its gonna wear down someday, and play will develop)
Possibly slippery handle when wet

REKAT Pioneer II (have'nt handled one before)
Likes
------
Strongest lock on the market (Rolling Lock)
Advertised long (several lifetimes) lock life
Comfortable looking handles
ATS-34 blade

Dislikes
--------
Blade looks like its ground at quite a shallow angle. I personally prefer flat
ground blades.
Logo.

I'd like to hear opinions of people who own or have handled either of these knives. Let me know what you think. Thanks.

Pang

Hi Pang,

I think you should handle these knives for yourself and then make a decision.

Later,
John

P.S. Pesonally I would go for the Ricochet.

hey pang, anybody been caned lately?? lol. just kidding... i think we could use that here in the states. i have owned a couple of the kershaw ken onion series random task knives [same knif, different blade shape] and i liked everything about them. the edge retention of the cpm440v is great. you'll love the torsion bar-assist opening. thinking about it; the one thing i did'nt like was the angle of the thumb stud. i tended to play with the knife alot and i quickly developed a callous on my thumb[ in addition to the one i already had].you'll find that bacause off the opening mechanism you will position your thumb differently than normal.i plan on getting a richocet when they come out with a left-handed model. i am ambidextrous, but i am developing carpel-tunnel syndrome in my right hand so i am tending to become totally left handed when it comes to folders. i have no expereience with the other knife you mentioned. good luck. i hope this helped. russ aka bladezealot. a sick mind is never bored.

I think that both are great. For me the bigger blade size of ricochet is plus. The handle shape in REKAT is not as comfortable but tastes wary. If you are going to skin game with these the polished G-10 may be slippery. In normal use polishing has not been problem for me. keshaw has rounded edges which makes it a little nicer in pocket. In kershaw the linerlock is really sturdy but rollinglock beats it.

Speed-safe in a knife adds also funfactor that beats even autos IMO.

For a user knife the needed size matters IMHO.

I think its all in what you want. The Pioneer is a pure worker. It is very sturdy but does not have an attractive finish but if you want a heavy duty knive, it should last forever. The Riccochet is much more attractive but it is sturdy also, but not a tank like the REKAT. Mine is a good knife but it has slight vertical blade play.

i have a pioneer I and have handled the pioneer II and the kershaw onions extensively. while the speed-safe is cool, i don't really need it and think of it as an unnecessary extra. the G-10 looks great, but it does have a lack of grip and while it is a great liner lock, it is still a liner lock. i've never had a cheap liner lock wear out, but when the rolling lock is on the table, i'll take that. the pioneer has an extremly comfortable handle IMO and the blade is a great worker. the 440V is superior to ATS-34, but most knife guys really don't mind sharpening that much anyway.

all considered, i'd take the pioneer. the ricochet is a great knife, but i'll take the pioneer over it anyday.

russ,

..., the one thing i did'nt like was the angle of the thumb stud.

The latest Kershaws with SpeedSafe mechanism have flat thumbstuds. I guess many people complained about the slanted studs.

pang,

I'd strongly advise you to go to your local dealers and handle them all, if possible. Pioneers have a much stronger locking mechanism. And there's nothing wrong with its ATS-34 (haven't seen it chipped like some other ATS-34 knives). But if you demand a stronger edge than ATS-34, and willing to sacrifice some locking strength (there are people who use their knives only to slice and light cutting), go with the Ricochet.

IMHO, all the Onion-Kershaws are very well
made and excellent users, albeit, liner-locks. The REKATs, on the other hand, probably have the strongest locks on the
market, along with the axis and frame-locks.
But I don't feel REKAT offers a product
worth the price they charge, irregardless of
the strength of their lock. Just my opinion.
