Opinions on the 184 BuckMaster

With all the tacti-cool stuff out there now I wanted to bump this back to the top.

I remember when this knife came out and it was the deal!

I think something like it (or it) could really go well again now.

Just my 2 cents..........

Yes Ohen...I would get one...make that "two" :)
I should have when I saw them when they first came out. Wouldn't make that mistake again.
How much were they then?

I bought one in the 1986 or '87 's... got one of the last ones that came with the silva compass. I think it was about $120.

They definately have the coolness factor, have heard some interesting comments when carrying it :)

I'd like to see a picture of the mirrored one mentioned in this thread.

If you have not seen this site, it has a good history of this weapon.

The 184 was, and is, a neat knife. When they first came out with them, there was a lot of interest and people flocked to pick them up even if the price was a bit on the high side. Buck pushed the 184 to the hilt and sold a bunch of them to the military crowd. This may well be Buck's strongest knife.

There were two small problems that I could recall. Firstly, the tip of the knife was a bit on the thin side. There were problems with people breaking the tip during prying motions. The balance of the blade however, was exceedingly robust and could stand a great deal of punishment. Secondly, the sawteeth were of little use. I suppose one could have used them for the cutting of wire, but the teeth were a veritable 'zero' as far as cutting wood. This knife is an excellent tool for the man who is a diver at heart, but if you use this tool on land, I'd suggest a good pair of leather gloves as the handle may cause you more than a minor blister.

The Buckmaster is everything but a knife.
It's much more than a knife.
It's a dream that won't go away.
It's keeps haunting me with pleasant memories of a misspent youth.
And makes me realize just how much I miss mine.

When I got my whitby copy back in '84 we did what the reviewer did and nipped down the scrapyard to hack an old ford to pieces. as far as I'm aware the big teeth were for hacking your way out of vehicles as opposed to cutting trees, the rope/ice saw teeth as well were a bit of a misnomer. Ive seen custom versions without any teeth and its a good looking knife.

My copy was handle heavy as it was 4mm thick instead of the 6mm for the real thing. but it was a usefull replacement for our issue survival knife which was basically half a machete and pretty useless.

taken my buck all round the world and never regretted it - despite the weight.

I love em so I've just picked another one up from holland on ebay :)

my whitby copy from the 80's saved money by having a matt silver paint finish to replicate bead blasting, when I stripped it off it was a mirror finish. Totally non tactical but cool looking. Once I work picks out I'll dig it out and post a few :)

Definitely a cool knife, I have always felt it was too big and heavy to carry.
But I have owned three of them.
Sold two and have the other displayed in my cabinet. Love to look at that knife!

How much do those pups weigh in at?

Curious George.

It wieghs 2 pounds 2 ounces in its sheath and 1 pound 8 ounces by itself.
The tip was beefed up once while this knife was in production but I don't recall exactly when this was done.
