I'll admit up front that most of my camping and hiking has been limited to car camping and short hikes. Because of that, much of my gear is large, bulky gear that works fine for car camping but is WAY to big for full day or overnight hikes.

Now that the kids are older my wife and I would like to get more serious about hiking and possibly overnight/weekend trips.

I just got back from the local Sportsman's Warehouse where I was checking out gear that I can replace the heavyweights with. The selection was rather slim in name brands but they had a variety of models.

The brands I'm wondering about are Kelty for back packs and Slumberjack for sleeping bags.

Does anyone use these brands? Are they of a decent quality for the money?

Thanks,
Chris

Kelty has a very good reputation. People may argue for or against slumberjack, but overall, they are good products.

Thing with going light is that it depends on how much you're willing to spend if you're buying commercial gear.

I think Kelty is still pretty good. They don't make the fanciest packs, but they're at least as tough as the competition. I think Slumberjack is a little further down the pole. They tend to be more generously cut (heavier, but good if you're a big guy). Unfortunately, the last Slumberjack I was acquainted with lost a lot of loft in the first year. I think it started out with a zero degree rating (very optimistic), went a little flat, and is now good for about 20 F. Not too bad if you're looking for a bargain and don't need anything super fancy.

Ive got a small daypack from Kelty (Bryce model) that Ive had for several years. Its still in just as good shape as the day I bought it. Very good quality. Would buy it again in a heartbeat.
