Opinions on This Enfield Please

If you want something that shoots a common US round, you will have a hard time doing better than those Enfields in 7.62 at $169.00

Sometimes you can find Mausers in 30-06, or more rarely in .308 on the gun auctions, but seldom for that little $.

Then again, the K31 is cheaper still!

Or you could go with the SKS

Or the lever action 30-30

Or...

:D

Hmmm... stopped in the local sporting goods store for their annual sale today. I asked about a Marlin Guide gun... they just so happened to have a blued version that got delivered today, and nobody had laid claim to it yet :)

I really want a stainless one, but they are hard to get a hold of... maybe I should jump on this one while I can.

Does this broken tooth tie into Sarge's hardtack-baking thread?

I'll bet a box of Enfield ammo, .303 or 7.62x51 NATO, just for thread content's sake. :D

The jury's still out on this. I had not eaten hardtack for about two days when the tooth let go but I wouldn't be surprised if earlier hardtack contributed. I should've taken a hint from those coyotes.

You all already know my thoughts about the Marlin. My only complaint is the cost of ammunition and even that can be made less painful with handloading.

You know, the front-locking lugs on the Mauser style bolt actions are, of course, rather stronger in theory, but wartime usage indicates that the old SMLE is plenty strong enough for any full bore military style load. I had one of those terrible little Rifle No. 5 Mk1's, the "Jungle Carbine". It was a thoroughly nasty little SOB to shoot and I still have a scar over my left eye from the receiver mounted rear sight on the bastard, but I fired any number of rounds through it, including some that that I later found out to have been meant for machine gun usage and that were extra hot. No wonder they kicked like mules. But the action came through splendidly. I sold the little beggar when I got tired of it beating up on my shoulder.
