Opinions on warranty services

I'd like to know the manufacturer if possible....

+1. Tells us the name of the manufacturer. I know the OP is trying to be diplomatic and all, but the manufacturer shouldn't have a problem with his name being mentioned made public if he believes his policy is fair.

Also, I'll know which company not to buy a liner/frame lock from.

I'll have to agree with revealing the company name unless its a single Knife maker. Might as well say it, you wouldn't be sparing any company that i can think of from anything that hasn't been said before here IMO.

Well, if I would've used a knife for quite some time, I probably would've not minded paying for shipping (actual local shipping) both ways. I could also estimate how much wear it would take before the next time and would vote with my money, if I'm OK (or not OK) with the terms and overall cost of the knife.

The problem I see here is that some manufacturers charge $14 and call it "return shipping", though USPS priority to any USA destination usually costs half of that even with insurance. As a matter of fact, if it was a cheap knife, it might as well be that manufacturer is selling you another knife at the factory price without overhead costs.

Also, some manufacturer's tend to approach quality control issues the same way as warranty repair. I don't mind paying for warranty repair shipping, but as far as quality control issues, I want the manufacturer (or distributor) to pay even for my end of the shipping, because NEW knife should be free from defects and it is their problem, if it was not.

If it were a knife I like and wanted to keep using, hells yes I'd pay the 14$ to get it serviced!

Now, if the issue were clearly a manufacturing defect or some other failure not caused by extensive use or normal wear and tear, I'd be pretty sore about having to pay shipping to-and-from the company. However, that doesn't seem to be the case with your knife.

As an aside, I paid more than that to send a knife one-way to Oregon and get it serviced under warranty last month (due to a manufacturing defect). If you only have to pay 14$ total, round-trip, that's not unreasonable.

I'll wait until I hear back to say who the manufacturer is. I don't want to stir up anything (including myself) before they get back to me. Even if they just have a good explanation for me paying all of the shipping, I'll be ok. I guess it doesn't help though that they are about 3 hours south of me. I could probably send it in a padded envelope, priority, and insured for 1/3 of what they want me to send for shipping.

Okay. I heard back from the manufacturer. They said send the knife with a note saying that _____ cleared the return shipping charge. Perhaps the fact that I'm about three hours up the coast from their facility helps, since shipping wouldn't cost them much (not even close to $14). Oh, and it's an Emerson knife. It's actually a Raven, so I'm interested to see how they fix it. Perhaps they have extra liners from when they were manufactured? As a side note, I have another Raven that is older and unless my eyes deceive me, has a thicker lock than the one I'm sending back to them. That particular knife hasn't seemed to have the lock face wear nearly as quickly as the one I'm sending in.

In closing (for this post at least), I'm pleased with how this situation is being handled. The customer service they seem to be providing will keep them on my potential future knife purchasing list. I did a quick search on Emerson's customer service, and people seem very pleased with it. How they're working with me fits what I've heard!

I just checked shipping rates, and it looks like $4.90 is the cost of Priority shipping between my house and their facility.

I knew the knife you were talking about from thevery first post. I really like their knives, but the liner lock on these worries me too. I sliced my thumb pretty good because of the detent not holding the blade in place when it was in my pocket and I reached for it. As a result, it gets zero pocket time.
Happy to hear that you got the ball rolling and things are looking positive.
