I plan to get a spyderco native 5, delica 4, and a strider sng as my next three knives. Anyone think I should reconsider these choices or think I should get something else first? I have a very small collection at the moment, (cold steel recon 1, sog spec elite and a benchmade mini griptillian). All opinions are welcome,, thank you.

Of course, every man has different tastes.
IMO,
I would go with a:
1) Sage 2 titanium or Sage 3 carbon fiber; possibly a Benchmade 710 in D2
2) Caly 3 in ZDP-189 or SuperBlue
3) your choice of Strider Sng (Lego scales) or a CRK Sebenza (about the same money) Both knives are excellent, but very different.

If you go with a Sebenza, make sure of your hand size and whether a SMALL Sebenza is too small for you. I've owned both, but only the large fits my hand-size.

Thank you for your thoughts, I'll check out the sage and caly. I will certainly be a Sebenza owner eventually, I'm planning on making the strider my camping folder.

Those should do quite nicely.
My dad loves his Native 5.
My wife often carries her Delica.
My SnG has seen plenty of use.

If you get the sebenza first you won't want the sng.

I really like spyderco knives, but don't really like the feel of sog or benchmade.

Personal opinion (not that there's anything wrong with that...;)).
The Umnumzaan did not make me not want a Strider.
Nor did those two make me not want all the other knives I have.

If you have so many knives they won't fit in the gun safe, you know what that means?
It's time to buy a bigger safe.

Thank you for all the suggestions, I plan on having a large collection and from what I read on Chris reeves knives, I will certainly have some. What has caught my eye about the sng are the field test videos on youtube by a user named gun smoke. I don't know if I'd want to hit a Sebenza with a brick. I'm not familiar with m390 so ill research that, and I think I'd a zero tolerance folder if I could find one without that flipper thing. As far as the Sebenza or the sng would you guys use the two knives for the same purposes?

Thank you stabman, In that case maybe instead of a delica 4 in the next three ill do a Sebenza and a sng but they're both expensive so it'll take some time to get that much money so which do you suggest first out of those two? Ill probably get the native 5 before either because it looks perfect for work and is a lot less expensive.

I like the look of the SnG more, and the ergonomics feel better in my hand, so I'd go with the SnG.
Others disagree though; if you can manage to hold both in hand, that would be the best.

Both hold resale value well, so if you decide either one isn't for you, at least you can get the cash back.
Both are also very iconic knives, and tend to get people expressing strong emotional opinions.

I have wanted to hold both, but I don't think anywhere around here has them. Maybe bass pro shop but I doubt it. I appreciate your input.

Stabman said it right...you can buy a "slightly used" large or small Sebenza for $325; about the same for a Sng. These are top-dog folders. The Strider has a much more "tactical" appearance; the Sebenza more of a gent's folder.
If you don't like it; sell it again for about the same cost. Again, be careful of hand-size...the closed grip-length on the small Sebenza is just less than 4"...pretty small if you wear a large glove. The large Sebbie closed length is about 4.7"; the Sng about 4.75".

Just a suggestion, everyone's different:

I get a kick out of diversity (*doesn't say it*) in my mess of knives. You've named three folders in sort of the same general category with various levels of 'quality'. You could consider the pros of having many different types of knives for various broad uses.

Off the top of my head---Outdoor/camping, bush, urban, dress, discreet, tactical, overbuilt, ra-dah, ra-dah, ra-dah...

I don't build my collection by brand, steel or blade. I look first for variety of uses, then within that, variety of type or styles. There are a few major brands I will not own due to not preferring their 'brand look,' just as there are some looks that I buy more within their brand---usually no more than two of one brand and that's true in both fixed and folder. Sometimes the 'two' will be big/little brothers, e.g. ZT's or Graymans (or is that Graymen??).

I certainly understand, however, how one can be drawn to only one or two brands, steels or types. For me though, having ten knives of the same brand or model...I'd feel more like I only owned one knife x 10.

It's all in what tickles your talons. Main thing is enjoy the ride. :)

I think large would be better for my hand size, thankyou for the measurement info sonnydaze, wouldn't want to spend that much money and it be uncomfortable to hold.

Thank you EChoil, I do like variety. That's the purpose of my question because I know a lot of you guys will know things I don't just from experience with certain brands and models. I can research all day on a knife in particular and wouldn't know a fraction of what the people who own or have owned the knife. The most information comes from use, I have handled spyderco's before and I know I like the ones that have been I'm my hand but I can only speculate at others. I bought my bm grip and sog spec elite at bass pro shop because a sells man told me a bunch of good things and I always loved knives since my Grampa gave me my first, so it was an easy sale. I've had both awhile now and I can say I like both but I can tell a big difference between the two as my grip has held up a lot better in construction. I want one of these big name knives cause I feel I can really start to call myself a collector after earning one. But variety is important I agree so I came here hoping to get help to open my eyes to a bigger world of knives, want to earn my place among this community. Seems like a place I'd enjoy, being able to talk to people with a love for knives aswell. None of my friends I associate with really care lol. More like "you're crazy for spending that much on a knife" lol. So I really do appreciate the help and suggestions and look forward to becoming part of this community.

Best thing you can do is stay right here. And start Googling models and company lines you see here that attract YOU. Learn the different knife manufacturers as well as the better online retailers. Build a list of technical features you prefer, maybe beginning with lock-type or, say, blade length; maybe even style of grip. Handle all the knives you can...if you live near a knife shop go there. Often. Be judgemental yourself on some of the judgements out there.

And don't get sucked into the confusion of steels at this point. Find a good steel chart and learn them but pick out only three or four that sound best for your needs and budget. For a push-start: AUS-8, 154 CM, S30V and then your pick of an ultra-high end steel that works best for you. It'll all fall together as you get into your decision making.

And learn all you can. Luckily knives are not a boring learn for those who are knuts. I will also predict that, down the road, by the time you reach the critical point of the habit, our malady will probably be covered by Obamacare. So go for it.

Thank you EChoil, it's nice to have support. You brought a really good question to me by the way as far as retailers go, I have blade hq, knife center, and knife shoppe in bookmarks already. Any suggestions for dealers?

I would but I'm not sure how much of that they allow in here...plus, you'll find them for yourself real fast with a day or two of checking out knives and hanging around here. Honestly you'll learn so much more doing it that way than if I were to name a few for you.

MODS: Can I mention KnivesShipFree, Knifeworks or A.G. Russell in here?
