SOG is a consumer-driven company and values the opinions of its customers. We have a new knife coming to market soon and want some input from you. The X-42 Recondo (pictured below) will feature the super BG-42 steel and come in two models. The first will come with SOG's black TiNi coating in a matte finish. The second will come in either a beadblasted finish or a more polished finish (likely a brushed finish).

This second version is where we would like your opinion. Which would you like to see? Beadblasted or polished?

Before casting your "vote," keep several things in mind. First, a version of the X-42 Recondo is already coming in a non-reflective, black-coated blade. Second, a beadblasted finish is a bit less corrosion resistant. Third, a beadblasted finish is also prone to scuffing. Fourth, with the beadblasting, the beautiful grindlines are less visible.

It is now that your input can count. Please cast your vote…

I'm happy with a polished blade. I was surprized to hear that beadblast is not as corrosion resistant as polished blades are. Why? Are you going to make a plain edged version of this knife?

Most definately a polished blade. SOG's polished blades look great. That and the fact I cant stand using beadblasted blades, the feeling i get while cutting makes my skin crawl, yuck

All the knives in the world go round and round, round and round, round and round...DAMN, one of them took my wallet !!! :)

Ron, if we would be in trial and I would be an opposite side's representative - I would say you are suggesting witness the answer

As to me - if we would speak about single version I would vote on non-glare bead blasted finish because it matches better this knife intended use.
But because Ti-Ni coated version will be available - I'm voting on polished blade. Let each knife knut can choose his favorite

Hope plain blade version will be available also.
Anyhow I can't wait when I could review this knife on Review & Testing Forum.

Polished Blade For Sure! L@@KS much nicer and is a tad more rust resistance than beadblasted blades no matter what the steel is!

Hi Ron,

Sounds like you are all for a polished blade yourself! I can only agree. Apart from the corrosion resistance and scoffing, a polished blade will look much better considering the dramatic grind this blade appears to have. I own a Tiger Shark with a satin finished blade and it looks very nice indeed.

I, for one am a little tired of the beadblasted finish, especially considering that precious few knives actually see any kind of real “tactical” action.

I'll have to go against and say beadblasted. Prefer non reflective blades. I'd get the black anyhow, so don't matter

How long is that blade?

I would have to vote for the polished blade. Especially since there will already be a black coated blade available. IMO the polished blade would look better on that knife, plus the reasons already mentioned by others.

Hi Everyone,

Keep the comments coming, but let me jump in for a sec.

It may seem by my topic/post, that I am biased toward the polished version and may have tried to get all of you to agree with me. That was not my intention. Personally, I'm split 45/55, barely slanting toward the polished version. But, our marketing research is telling us overwhelmingly that coatings and beadblasting, rather than polished blades, are what will sell. I assumed by posting this request that your slant would be toward the coated/beadblasting as well. So, I gave the arguments for the polished version.

Needless to say, your overwhelmingly clear "polished" vote (so far) did surprise us a bit.

Now to answer a few questions.

Fudo: Beadblasting is less corrosion resistant primarily because it create pores in the blade, giving breeding ground for rust. Straight edge vs. partially serrated blade? It will be introduced with partial serrations, but a completely straight edge may someday be available or possibly a special order scenario might present itself down the road.

Sergiusz: I think I responded to your "courtroom" statement and explained why I presented this topic as I did. Also, it's always great to have your valued comments.

Jan: You're right. With precious few exceptions, who today really needs a stealthy blade? I think it comes down to personal aesthetics.

Tuff: Blade length is 5".

We're really excited about this knife. The steel, the shape. It's amazing!

Thanks all...more "votes" and comments are welcome.

Polished. Both for being non-ugly and for being easier to clean. If you are moving about in the dark with naked steel, one hopes in the service of a friendly government, there's a black-coated version in the line. For civilian purposes, it's going to cut food sooner or later, because as matter of principal it has to earn its keep, and a polished blade is SO much easier to clean up, with or without soap and water.

Ron,
I bought a SOG Vision and paid 170 cash for it with in 30 seconds of seeing it and touching it.
The thing that stood out? The Titanium handle was nice and added a good balanced feel - but that big polished blade was what sold me.
This is after spending a couple HOURS in a well stocked knife shop looking at EVERY folder in the store. Looking and rechecking... I was WANTING to want to buy a Boker or Elshwitz... Your SOG VISION one HANDS DOWN.
POLISHED!

Hey George,

Wow!...Do you want to be a SOG salesman? Sounds like you already are!

Thanks for the kind comments. I, too, think the Vision is one of the most amazing and beautiful knives I've ever seen.
