So, back on track, what's the better deal, $60 for very likely soft m390 or $90 for likely decent quality s35vn?

Well, I decided to just get them both and see what I think after I've had a chance to use both for a while. I'll try to remember to do a comparison post after I've had a few weeks with each of them. I really don't expect to be able to detect any significant difference between the usefulness and edge retention of the two so it will most likely boil down to which one I prefer based on how they feel in my hand.
