I have kind of an odd dilemma  I just got the latest release from S&M, a set of 4 Wildcat Driller Whittlers. These are 4 1/2" closed with a spey & pen secondary blades, also a wedge. They are certainly not anything that will be used, just for the collection. All bone scale covers, Brown, Fire Oak, Corn Cob Jig & Amber Carved Stage Bone.
My dilemma (of sorts) comes with the fact that 1 knife doesn't have the blade etches. It is the ACS knife and it is the prettiest example I have ever seen. So should I send it back for 1 with the etch? Or just keep it & worry about the blade etch when I go to sell them?
I know, not much of a problem ;) really just an excuse to post knife pictures! :D

Can you post photos of the other two please? The bone on these is superb!

I am not that fond of blade etching and wonder if the one without it is a rare find and therefore may actually have some value because of the lack of it. Sorry, can't really help but really would like to see the other two. :)

It looks better without the etch anyway. I wouldn't worry about it.

beautiful! personally i wouldnt worry too much, but thats me and i'd sure be carrying the thing! See the blade etch bugs me, in general i dont like graphics all over the blade. I edc'd mine for a while and still do from time to time, love this pattern:D

I also collect and trade Schatt & Morgan knives, and it seems to me that the majority of S&M collectors value the blade etchings.

I'd do a quick check to see if your unetched Wild Cat Driller has some particularly high value because of its (apparent) uniqueness.
But if it doesn't - and my guess is that the lack of etching hurts rather than helps its value - I'd send it back for etched blades.

Schatt's turnaround is pretty quick in my experience; usually less than two weeks.

The other 2 ... Just for you! :D

I just noticed, the etch of the date & pattern # on the Fire Oak is a different font that the other 2 knives.
Looks like a real mixed bag on this deal. :o

I can't stand all that writing on my knives. I say keep it with out the etch.

Having seen the process at Queen, I'd ask them to etch it! It's done on the finished knife, and for collector knives, there is no question the etch is valuable. If an etchless knife had extra value, guess how many would be buffed off!! Hmmmmmmmmm????
The blade needs polishing anyway. I see scratches in the pic.

I prefer the knife without the etch, and would use it too...you can always get one with an etch for the collection

If you use the knife the etching will wear away anyway. If you are collecting only, then you need to decide if it's more valuable with or without the etching, and whether you want to have that "fixed".

I like the non etch, and I am biased, I use all of my knives, rotate them through. When I die, my kids will not inherit unused knives, Good Lord willin and the creek don't rise of course....

Don't worry about it, just put one in each pocket and forget about it

I would go with it. That knife may be more collectable with out the etching and to me it looks better. Yeah; I know most of mine have etcing.

No etch for me. But I use all my knives.
I traded for A GEC That had etching on one blade
a trip to my buffer no more etch.

I HATE etched blades and will not usually buy a knife that is etched. When I do buy one It gets sent to the buffer....
