this recent acrylic was'nt catalogued by gec main site. was shown on a major dist. site.desiginated as Smoked Oyster Looking Glass. i purchased as a future rare pattern but not sure i really like it. as always i'm sure members will be candid AS to their opinion [you wo'nt hurt my feelings] so what do you guys think about this knife. it is very hard to get a good pic. thanks to you'all dennis.

It's....ummmmm....well, I would have to say it is definately...ahhhhh...sorta...well...

It's different?

I just asked the ex who just walked in the room...she says she likes it..."it's purt-i-ful" was the actual quote...

I like it!
I should get into GEC acrylics more. They have some unique styles.

I see they also have the "Red Abalone Looking Glass" acrylic, Green as well. I like many of the colorful scale materials such as their tomato or eggs and hot sauce acrylics but the faux abalones have never really interested me.

Actually, I think it's kind of neat. Kind of like a nice custom paint job on a chopper. Or maybe a reminder of the heydays of The Gratefull Dead and road trips and tie dyed T-shirts.

I think I like it.

I checked out a few of the looking glass acrylics at the Blade show and I kind of like them. It does have a little bit of a novelty look to it, but I think it's pretty cool.

I don't like it, but then again I don't care much for most acrylics, or most colors for that matter.

Heck, I won't even wear any clothing thats not a shade of grey, black, brown, dark green, or navy blue.
So I wouldn't pay a bit of attention to what I think about it:p

If you like, thats all that matters:thumbup:

I like the knife on a few levels. The first being the color and pattern in this acrylic is appealing to me. But more importantly I like it because it shows that a maker is willing to step out of the box a bit , take a chance, and offer something that is unique. As much as we all love fine stag, great jigged bone and Ebony , it would be a boring world if those were our only choices.

Thanks for sharing the knife with us!

I think it looks pretty nice Dennis. What with all the other acrylics you have why not keep this one to include in the mix.

I like it, but then again, I need to ask my wife if I match when leaving the house:)

It has a nice pattern in the acrylic. I am always mixed on acrylics. As a kid, most acrylic handled knives were the cheap dime store pen knives or advertising knives. Those were the knives that I had because they were what I could afford. I always lusted after the bone and ivory handled ones the adults in my family carried.

This experience has given me a prejudice that acrylics are cheaper and more of a kids knife no matter what is under the slabs. The few acrylics I do have tend to be darker more natural colors like ivory, burl or tortoise.

In conclusion nice knife but it would sit in a drawer and I would never warm to it.

Hi,

I don't know. I think it's one of those "you really like it, or you don't". It really doesn't appeal to me. GEC does make some nice acrylics, but this one doesn't do it for me.

If only the pins had been nickel silver or stainless steel, they would have blended in more to the scales than the brass. Due to the clear resin, the pins look like they are sticking out. Personally, I prefer a less translucent/transparent scale material.

thanks guys i'm surprised so many kinda liked it. as you know i have many acrylics but bone is in a class by itself. nice to hear from Ken Erickson a maker whom needs no introduction. ken certainly has an open mind. however i beleive most would agree with myself that in custom pieces only natural materials suffice. i wish gec would get into some more extravagant woods like purple heart & birch burl. thanks for the opinions.dennis

I prefer natural materials on my production slip joints but that doesn't look horrible.

Not my thing but it reminds me of some marbles I used to have as a kid.
