Opinions, should i buy a cheap knife now or wait to get a better one?

Hi, I want a new knife and I have already bought a few cheaper ones ($50-$100) and I want another one should I buy another cheaper one or wait a few more months to buy a better one? I think I know the answer but I can't read your minds so what are you opinions thank you for you time -calvin

Depends. Are you just buying to "scratch the itch" or are you buying for an intended purpose? I find alot of satisfaction in buying a good budget folder. Doesn't mean I don't have expensive knives, I do, but sometimes the budget folder hold me over until I get the itch again. Lol

Well, there are enough excellent knives in the $50-$100 range to keep a hundred collectors occupied for many lifetimes. On the other hand, there are some really nice products in the $100+ range too.

Some general tips learned from decades of knife Collecting and Accumulating:
1) Don't spend money just because you have it. Wait for something that really catches your eye.
2) Watch and wait for closeouts and sales. You'll feel more confident about buying a $150 knife if you only pay $75 for it.
3) Buy the widest range of knives and bladed objects available before "settling" on a particular style or brand to collect.
4) Don't forget the very affordable custom knives sold every day on BladeForums by member makers. Pay $200 for a mass-produced brand name factory piece, or spend the same on a one-of-a-kind handmade custom? 95% of the time I'd rather have the custom.
5) If you get burned out or find yourself in dry spells where nothing on the market is really appealing, free yourself to step away for a while.

Never ever buy a cheap knife. Inexpensive, sure, all day long. I love my Svord peasants, Opinels, Moras. Average price, less than $20 each, lots available for less than $10. Now, a $10 Opinel and a $10 gas-station-generic are both inexpensive, but the gas-station-generic is the only one of the two that's cheap.

Well said. Agreed. It bums me out seeing someone with wasted pocket space because they'd rather have real tree camo laminated on their scales instead of a "valuable" knife like an Opinel.

Buy an ANIB Spyderco Paramilitary 2, in S30V, from the Exchange right away, for a hair over one hundred bucks.
You might find you'll never want/need a different knife.
Just sayin'

This is a good question, the only way to appreciate why some of the more expensive knives cost so much is to buy one use it and handle it. I would say go with the more expensive one next and you can always buy a less expensive on later. A warning is once you start moving up you do not stop. I saw a post before me on this thread which said that they would never spend $100 on a knife and to that I say you have to experience the knives and appreciate the quality. However we all have our own opinions. I use to think $100 was an expensive knife, but now the $300+ knives are expensive, but still worth it and I still buy those. $100 is still a good chunk of money to me but I do not consider it an expensive knife and I do appreciate the higher end knives and think they are worth the cost to me.

Buy once, cry once. If you want a knife just to get one, get an inexpensive knife. If you want to have a more expensive knife, save for it. I haven't bought a new folder in over a year, simply because the ZT0560 in my pocket isn't going to be replaced by anything I've found yet.

buy a few cheap and few nice knives.

buy a few nice knives.

im kind of in the middle, my cheapest folder is $160.00 though...
