OPINIONS WANTED! KA-BAR for Aussie girlfriend.

Fixed or folding?
As good looking as that folder is, I was looking at more of a fixed blade (I'll probably get her something like a Buck red point at some point). But you are right, I don't think a giant bowie (as much as I love them) will be the best for her. She's a pretty tough girl, but I couldn't imagine handing her a huge chunk of steel for little ole her to tote around for miles and miles in the woods.

let her pick it out. it won't be a surprise but at least you know it'll be a knife she likes.

A Izula 2 - I think thats perfect for her.
Seconded though it's hard to recomend a knife for someone we don't know. What's her temperment like? Will she even carry a big knife? I'm just asking because my girlfriend wouldn't carry anything bigger then the Izula 2 and even then she rarely carries a knife hiking. Car camping she takes a kitchen knife and her* machete but even then she's not carrying them.

*By her machete I mean my super nice Blind Horse machete that she "borrowed" once. Watch your blades man! :D

Thank you all for the input, I am leaning more towards the MK1, but how do you think a SOG Seal pup would fly over for a lady?It is a pretty and eleagant looking blade and I have a seal pup elite (which is longer), or do you think it would be a little tawdry for both of us to have the same knife?

A Mark 1 or Becker would be more suited for outdoor adventure, I think. I have and love my 5 inch classic Ka-Bar but I think they have more outdoor-specific knives. Also check out the pending Becker Tweeners.

The SEAL Pup is a great companion, I love the size and simplicity. Ergos are good, balance is great, and SOG's AUS8 is about the best suited stainless steel you'll find for a fixed blade of its size. It gets crazy sharp real fast. That said, I think Kabar's 1095CV is still stronger, with better edge retention, and I think the Becker series or Mk.1 would be better-designed for outdoor use. I think the stacked leather handle on that Mk1 is very 'aussie' in style :)

Thats what I was going to say... but I don't have any experience with the pup.

Then again, my knowledge of Aussies is basically all gleaned from crocodile dundee (I understand thats not the best, but it is what it is :)).

Good luck :).

You're right, the seal pup probably isn't the best choice for her. Just a random thought, I don't own any Cold Steel blades, but what is the general feelings toward the Roach Belly (for her)?

I'd say you should get her a Buck 119, or if that's a little too large, a 105.

Ok, so my girlfriend is moving here to the states in February from Sydney. She loves camping and adventuring, so I thought it would only be fitting to hook her up with a great American blade. I was thinking either a short classic KA-BAR http://www.amazon.com/KABAR-Short-Black-Plain-Knife/dp/B000GKD41G/ref=pd_sim_sbs_sg_3
Or a Mark 1 http://www.amazon.com/Ka-Bar-Kraton...3KF2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1324879278&sr=8-1.
If you guys have any other suggestions I am completely open to them (my price range is $50-60). Thanks!

Mark 1 for sure, preferably with leather.
Both my brothers have the short classic, and they agree that the handle on the Mark 1 is far better for actual use.:)

Well I'm an Aussie just down the road from your gal and we're not all bowie throwing, leather wearing yobbos.

I'll second the idea of the Buck 119 and maybe back it up with a Buck 112 Ranger with the paperstone handles, or even one of the Bucklite range, some of which are available with pink handles if she's into such things.

(Now, back to my BK9........)
