I am building a kmg clone. I have gotten to the point I have to make a decision about pullys. 2 cone pullys will give you aprox. 800 min and 3500 max. Run 3 cone pullys and you go to 500 ish and 6500 ish. My question is do I need speeds above 3500 or below 800. I have read what I can find on the net and the opinions are all over the place. This is as simple and direct as I can put so tell me what you think. I need your opinions. Thanks

I use the 3 step pulley's and some times wish my slow speed was slower, getting ready to go variable.I use the fasest speed for profiling and thats about it.But slower is better.

3 step.. fine belts need slow speed and when you grinding gets better you will want to chomp through alot of steel quickly. there is really no down side to 3 step compared to the limits of 2 step.

Hi, I would also like to know the lowest and fastest speeds recommended for a KMG. Anybody got some numbers for us?

I want to say that Rob recommends max of 5000 rpm's through the drive shaft on his production KMG's. I believe it's related to the max sustainable/safe rpm for the bearings. Depending on your drive wheel size, that will give you plenty of speed at the belt.

, I guess I was not clear. I was asking wether to use 2 - 4 step cone pulleys and one belt or 3 - 4 step cone pulleys and 2 belts. The third cone would be on a jack shaft of sorts and the result would be doubling ish the max speed and cutting the min speed in half ish and a lot of in betweens. If it is needed.?

Belt speeds are usually spoken of in surface feet per minute.
For modern [quality] belts sfm of 5400 is not overly fast, when using 30 or 50 grit belts.
There is no such thing as too slow a speed; it just depends on what material you are working on and what belt grit is being used.

The next consideration is Horse Power to drive the belts. There is no substitute for horse power and nothing more frustrating to work on than an underpowered machine.
If I had to choose between a lot of different speeds and horsepower, I would chose horsepower without a question.

Good luck with your new machine, Fred
