My S&W MP15 will be delivered next week and I want to get a sight for it, I was thinking eo tech or trijicon reflex any other recomendations?

Mainly shorter range target, say up to 100 yards, the majority of that will be less than 50 yards. I love ACOGs but there is no way I could justify the price right now.

I have an Eotech and am quite pleased with it. Built like a tank, has a large opening, even if you manage to break the glass, if still has glass in it will work.

If I didn't have it, I would look into the triple powered sight that I believe Trijicon makes...just because it seems like a good gadget.

Also the 3x power sights seem good because we are all aging and sometimes you might want to reach out a bit further.

FWIW, the Reflex has worked well for me for a decade or so. I can't personally compare it to the Eotech, however.

save your money and get a trijicon acog. it's worth it. the ones with the fiber optic thing on top.

we use the here in iraq. they work really well.

acogs are good. they are also really high $$.

so are eotechs & they are a little more affordable.

aimpoints are good too, IIRC all 3 are in use in iraq & 'stan.

to me the acog is more like a low power scope vs a red dot quick point kinda site, imho its just what ya plan to use it for,

imho these 3 scopes are as good as it gets for an M4 kinda rifle.

In that case, a red dot is the way to go. ACOGs are not veryfast at closer ranges unless you learn some tricks for using them, and you're still going to be behind an unmagnified red dot.

You can't go wrong with an EOTech or Aimpoint. I used to think you could get by with a cheaper red dot, but I've been through too many from bargain basement to mid range and it's false economy. If it's possible you might use this gun for personal defense, then don't get anything less than an EOTech or Aimpoint.

This is tough to answer without knowing the configuration of your rifle.

Will you have access to the iron sights with the scope on?

If you will be removing the rear iron sight in order to mount your scope I cannot recommend anything that uses a battery. If the battery dies you have no sights and that is not a good thing. on a flat top you can mount a rear sight aft of the scope for that emergency but I am not fond of the method. I think you would be better served with the Reflex which does not rely on battery power or a low power (2.5 ie) scope. The only AR I use a red dot on can be used with the iron sights through the body of the dot with no problems.

Absintheur, do you know anything about the Israeli Trilux Illuminated Scope? I have heard the Israeli Special Forces uses this scope on their M4s. I have shipped a couple of pocket knives to some fellow knife knuts in Israel but don't really know any thing about Israeli scope quality or even if rrg991981 would be interested in something like that.

If it’s a red dot you want you cannot beat an Aimpoint. EO Tech can’t come close in regards to battery life and there have been durability issues. I would get an Aimpoint with a 2 MOA dot. I think when Aimpoint went to a 4 MOA dot that is when this stuff popped up about red dots not being good for over 100 yards. I have an old Aimpoint 3000 with a 1 MOA dot and have lots of round though that set up with lots of shooting out beyond 300 meters.

If I had the bucks though I would have an ACOG TA33, the thing with the ACOG is that your reticule wont white out if you target is near a bright light source like say a person crouched by a car that has the headlights on. On a red dot you will loose your dot in that scenario.

I on the rifle I have a removeable carry handle with a flattop and full rail under, I would take off the handle add the sight and a flip up iron site too.

I don’t own an AR with a removable carry handle; if I did it would have a regular fixed front sight and something like a LMT fixed rear with an Aimpoint co witnessed

That's my plan, is there an issue with a fixed raised front site and a red dot site with a flat top upper?

IMHO if you're going to do nothing but close in stuff, get the EOTECH. But I think you'll eventually want to reach out more so in that case I'd reccomend an ACOG with the reddot piggybacked. It costs a lot more but if you'd like you can get the Docter reddot (that mounts on your ACOG) seperately and put it on by itself. Then later go for the ACOG.

Just have to get a mount that puts the iron sights in the bottom third of the Aimpoint. I would bet someone like LaRue Tactical would have something.

If you choose optics with magnification that are mounted on the flat top the fixed front sight will appear as a blur in the bottom of the FOV. I use my Colt 6920 for short range target/personal protection and even though I can remove my carry handle I opted to mount my ACOG TA01 on the handle and still can use my iron sights through the ACOG's hollow base. Close your eyes and shoulder your rifle. Then open your eyes and see where your natural line of sight is and you will know where to mount your optics. If your natural line of sight is even with the iron sights then mount the optics on the flat top. If you are like me and see a higher line of sight then mount the optics on the carry handle. There is a good thread on this topic over on AR15.com. A lot of guys like their optics on the handle...
