A2 and I've been happy with them. W2 would probably take a keener edge
I would say use anything you can harden properly or get heat teated properly for you.
As you have heard me say all too often :
These are all A-2 and they are all sharp enough to shave curls off a single hair while it is still in my arm. I get that level of edge performance EVERY TIME with no real effort or talent on my part by using a Varitas jig. So . . . if you gots the tools or ability to sharpen anything as sharp as you would want A-2 isn't going to hold you back or let you down.
Chisel wise I go mostly white paper steel (because that is what is available in the chisels I want ) with some blue paper steel thrown in because I liked the look of the chisel. I made none of them.
Sharpening angle is EVERYTHING . . . the only problem I have ever had with steel in chisels is when I buy some Western crap with soft steel . . . even "name brand" chisels . . . most all of it is soft useless junk make to sell and not to use.
63 to 65 hardness ? ?
No problems at all just pick the right grind and use it.
PS: a bit of trivia for non woodworker dudes . . . there is over three hundred dollars worth of hand plane blades in that stack and that is for just one hand plane. I hate to stop what I am doing to sharpen. Very often I would go through that whole stack in a day or less.
This is very hard bubinga wood.
