I have to say, I grew up with the Transformers and I vastly prefer the new design of Optimus. The original, drawn concept of him WAS as a long-nosed semi, and he only became a cabover when they realized it'd make the toy easier to design. Peterbuilt 379 is absolutely the epitome--to me--of a representation of Detroit steel, and analogous to the America of the 80s that I was brought up to believe in: noble, hardworking, and a voracious consumer of fossil fuels!
Cabovers always represented (in my mind) the sort of creeping Japanese-ism that was taking place at that time, arguing for less excess and more efficiency. Still pisses me off--I'm a REAL capitalist, and that means that if I have the money to do something then I can do it and to HELL with your more Eco-friendly, nimble cabover trucks with their smaller engines! Does a semi
need to be able to do 100mph on the highway carrying a full load? No. But isn't it cool when it can? Yes, yes it is.
Edit to add: no, it is NOT lost on me, the irony that Transformers' roots are Japanese, both as an original concept and as far as the animation itself. That still doesn't mean I have to like cabover trucks...
