Hey all, I'd really appreciate your help in this,

I'm looking for a few different options in a small EDC fixed blade. I'm already liking the Bumble Bee by BRKT.

Criteria:
-Under 8" overall
-Pocket carry capable
-Carbon steel
-Traditional style knife & sheath

Thank you,
Will Sneed

Will,
There are a few makers, right in the fixed blades for sale,by Maker section,on BF's
A lot are in your size range w/ carbon blades
Go take a look,
-Vince

I was looking for a small pocketable fixed blade and got this from Blindhorse Knives. This was one of their monthly specials with 4140 steel and micarta handles.

Although they come with a nice belt sheath, I decided to get this pocket sheath from Knives Ship Free and carry a flashlight too.

They're nicely made and not expensive. The idea was to throw in cargo pants or front pocket and stay upright.

JohnnyR,

How do you like that 4140 steel for edge retention and re-sharpening? That is one of the few steels I have not tried as of yet.. Neat little knife and combination sheath too! I like it. :)

sunnyd,

I've only had it for about 2 weeks or so. I haven't had too much of a chance to put it to task, it's not my work EDC. I'm not exactly sure of the angle of the grind to start with. I sharpened it up on my Sharpmaker with the 40 degree bevel. Didn't bother with my DMT coarse diamond stone. Spent some time with the corners and flat sides of both the brown and white rods. Took awhile, but sharpened up pretty well. I've touched it up once with the fine white rods since. Doesn't help much does it. :) It's 3/16ths, so it seems thick, to me anyway. The knife itself is about 5-3/4" OAL. I believe they've recently used up their supply of 4140 and switched to O1 steel now.

I have some issues with thumbstuds, holes and nail nicks in the Winter tearing up the skin on my thumb, so I was looking for something fixed and simple. So far, I'm liking it a lot.

Go to Ragnars Ragweed Forge site and look at the brusletto Baldor. Great little knife for just about anything.

Nice looking small blade there JohnnyR.
Does it have brass pins? Useful size.

Gents, let's try to keep this discussion more to recommendations of knives and not so much links to vendors. Interested parties can look 'em up. Thank you.

You very rarely see it mentioned or talked about on these forums, but I really like Case's "Finn" fixed blade. It's a tiny little thing, looks almost like a toy, but it's a great performer. I've been using it in the woods lately, and have been impressed.
It's not carbon steel, but the stainless they use holds up quite well in the field. The "old" designs and steels still work just as well as ever. The Finn's thin, narrow blade makes it a demon of a slicer, and it eats up wood like a champ.

The overall length is 8.5", a hair over what the OP was asking for, but it's a very compact package. The knife and sheath disappear in your pocket, you hardly notice that you're carrying it until you need it. And you can't get much more traditional.

There are so many choices that fit what you are looking for.
I've gotten on a Bark River kick lately, and have not been disappointed.

I recently picked up a Mini North Star. Its a nice little knife. 7 inches overall but it is one of their Sandvik stainless versions.
I did have a Pro Scalpel II that I really liked, but I have big hands and it was just a little smaller than I wanted.

As mentioned, there are some great deals on here from makers too.

The Bark River Lil Creek might well fill the bill, but BR knives do tend to be rather thick.

Pity you exclude stainless as one small low priced knife I've used a lot recently is the BUCK Gen5 Skinner, very nicely made and compact slicer. Some versions come with a leather sheath, all can be worn vertically or horizontally on the belt .They can be put on to pack straps very well too.

I'm not against a quality stainless steel. Thank you all for the many well-suited choices.
