Options for Sebenzas?

I'm all ready to buy a Small classic 2000 Sebenza as my first (and hopefully only) knife. I have a few questions that I hope some of you might be able to help me out with..

1. What's the difference between orderiing directly from CRK as opposed to ordering from a 3rd party retailer?

2. I'm looking at the retail price list on the CRK webpage right now and it lists several options for the Sebenzas -

- Polished hollow grind
- Small swedge
- Partial serrated blade
- Engraving
- Double thumblug

Can anyone help elaborate a bit on these options and maybe also give some opinions on why i would or would not want them? I'm referring to everything but the engraving of course, which is self explanatory.

I'm planning on getting the regular plain blade, but I can definitely see the utility value in having a partially serrated blade. I haven't heard mention of it yet from any forum readers/posters so i can only assume that these aren't too popular.

ok, now on to accesories.. =)

For what i'm about to be paying for this knife, I may as well pick up the small bottle of fluorinated grease as well and a pouch. Calfskin or cordura? Does anyone have a picture of either or both? 95% of the reason why i'm getting this knife is for utility so i'm thinking that the cordura will serve me better in that regard. (the other 5% is because its one awesome looking knife!) Thanks for any comments and advice!

Welcome to the forums. I can tell you that while the Sebenza is a great knife, the one you order will not be your last!

If you do a search you can find out a lot about these options.

I have the dual thumblug, and really like it. If I need to open my knife with the opposite hand, no problem. It does cost a little extra, but well worth the money.

If you are going with a fairly standard Sebenza, you can get one from a dealer much faster than waiting on CRKs list. I got mine from someone on the forums, at a much lower price (the knife was well used). If you want a brand spanking new knife, order from a dealer, or direct. If you're going to use the knife hard, and don't want to worry about putting that first scratch on it, find a good deal on a used one.

As far as sheaths, I've been happy with my Gary Graley leather horizontal sheath. Costs a little more than one from CRK, but also well worth the investment. Check out his website: http://www.geocities.com/Yosemite/Cabin/7306/blades.html

I hope this gets you started!

First and only knife…well, you are making a good choice.

You might be able to get a knife quicker from a dealer, but you won’t be able to get those options without making a special order. For that you should just go strait to CRK in Boise.

Polished hollow grind – just what it says, the flats of the blade are still stonewashed. Standard on the decorated models, looks great but more apt to suffer abuse. If you are buying for utility, the stonewashed finish is best.

Small swedge – a small false edge ground on the last inch or so of the blade. It might give better penetration, but not too useful for real work. Some cosmetic appeal, though.

Partially serrated blade – A case of personal preference, but it does take up a good portion of useful blade, especially on the small Sebenza. The knives are very sharp and capable of cutting most materiel, so there is little advantage to the serrations.

Double thumb lug – A very handy feature, especially in a working knife.

The fluorinated grease works great, definitely get some. The calfskin pouch is just a slip pouch and not a belt sheath. The cordura sheathes are well made, nothing fancy. It is too bad that they don’t offer a leather sheath for the small, the ones for the large are quite nice.

Have fun and good luck.

OK, I want to give my opinnion about the some of these...
The grease - get it! It's seems to be very good indeed, and not that expensive.
The dual thump stud - don't get it. First of all, ruins the lines and makes the knife ugly (from the other side of course - but still... bad, bad thing)! Some have had conserns about it interfering with your pocket. I can definity see how this would be possible, but I'm not sure if this really has caused anybody much problems. I would not get it for this reason either. Opening the knife with left hand... seems to be easy (not that easy, but definitely doable) if you can use other fingers than just thump for opening it (I can open my Sebbie by "pulling" the blade with my index finger...). And did I say it, and (specially) the extra cutout on the other side ruins the perfect lines... it's plain ugly.

Hugo (sorry guys, these are my opinions

If I were you I would go to Wright Knives & Sporting Goods in La Mesa. Dennis has a great selection of Sebenza's in stock with many of the options your curious about, and you may find exactly what you are looking for. I was able to get my Sebenza engraved from him quicker than going directly to CRK, and found a friend in Dennis that can't be done online. Jerry

Thanks everyone for all your helpful comments! Its really helped to narrow down my preferences to figure out what it is I'm going to get.

Would you happen to have a street address or phone number for Wright Knives & Sporting Goods? If its against board rules to post information of that sort, you can just email it to me. La Mesa is about 30-40 min away from my office in Sorrento Valley so I'll see if I can get there this afternoon... boy am I excited!

I would call first to make sure Dennis isn't at a show. Good luck. Jerry

I have a small plain that i am very happy with, so i do not have any options i can rave about. I will say that you would be better off getting a sheath from Gary. They are fantastic and i am very sure all the people here on the forum can tell you he is a pleasure to deal with.

Go see Dennis, buy your Sebenza, contact G2 for a sheath. Enjoy....
