Options on budget single blade traditionals

NJBill, that Grohmann knife is flat out gorgeous.
I second the recommendation of Sodbusters and Opinels. I own and love both.

BTW, NJBillK, you just cost me $69 by posting the pic of that Grohmann.:D
Thanks guys.

Let me know how you like it.
I have always eyed them up, but the short sabre grind goes against my preferences for a slicer friendly blade.

Ben:
This is why I carry a Coghlans Opinel (sort of a slim handle with a slightly sturdier clip than found on other slims). Though I did do a small modification to mine, just a small EO notch was all it needed.
This is the knife that I have personal experience with and would be my "official" suggestion, had you of not stated that you already own some Opinels and want a slip joint.

From top down; slim clip, folding garden knife, Coghlans opinel.

I've had my eye on the full size lock back for years. Kinda slipped off my radar recently. I didn't know they made a mini until I saw your post. I'll report back when it arrives.

Case Toothpick. I think the Small can be had for low $40's.

I personally like the look of the Sodbusters over the Toothpick.

Douk Douk comes in different sizes, carbon or stainless steel at about $30...and its an import :)

It looks like Boker Tree Brand has a genuine bone model for about $30 at knife center. But at 4" blade, it might be a tad large.

Is there anything glaringly obvious I'm missing here? Do i just need to pony up the extra $10 and get a Case slimline trapper with bone?

I own that exact model and I'll be honest, I like the size and the blade and handles look decent enough, but overall IMHO this knife is barely on par with some of the rough riders I have for a 1/3 of the $$. Little bit of gaps, very light walk and talk, proud at half stop, not great transitions, and slightly off centered blade. But who knows, maybe I just got a dud!

Mainly commenting so I can find this later - the more I look at them, the more multiple blades on a traditional irk me. I found that out last summer, when doing food prep away from home - I'm so used to sighting down my kitchen knives that having a main blade offcenter (or worse, crinked) really annoyed me much more than I expected.

That said, I love my douk douk and opinels for their rugged simplicity. I have an idea of what I want to upgrade them with, but I'm loving the suggestions from others here.

Just to add, GEC might be making the best production traditionals right now. The cheapest GEC is the Farm and Field, essentially a sodbuster, about $55 shipped if you get delrin handles. Not wood or bone, but I think orange delrin looks fantastic.
