I just got one in the mail yesterday from the exchange and here's my initial impressions.
The best part about it imo is a toss up of it's shape and how beautiful i think it is and the grip.
I find the grip very comfortable in the traditional grip (with fingers on the lock). Choking up on the blade/using the front choil feels nice and backing the index finger to the next groove(where the spydie hole is while closed) is even better.
Handling in the reverse grip(thumb on the butt of handle), and pull cuts (fingers on the spine), this knife is one of the most comfortable i've ever held.
The handles and blade thickness are just right imo, not too thick or thin. Overall its a little thinner then a pm2. The pocket clip position is in the perfect spot and makes for great carry(i prefer deep carry clips, but not for this one). I personally also appreciate the lack of jimping. None on the spine or choil and makes it just that much more comfortable in hand.
The machining/f&f is pretty dog on good. Has beautiful grind lines all over it. The edge on mine is nicely done on one side and a little uneven on the other. Something i don't usually see from Spyderco, but nothing to fuss about.
Edges are a little sharp on the liners, and the liner lock pinches alot. Not a whole lot of area on the lock to get to. I would assume it's a compromise to keep the handle as nice and comfortable as it is.
For anybody who has owned other Japanese Spydies, g10 police, endura, starmate, etc.., you definatly get the same feeling from this one.
Another thing worth noting, is i like how over built it is. Most of the time i think Spyderco doesn't overbuild, but builds just right. The Opus has a pivot, stop pin, 3 decorative standoffs(i thought 1 could do the job), and a landyard tube. The screw for the liner mentioned earlier in this thread isn't there. But the hole on the liner is?
Happy they went with skeltonized liners as well. The weight feels about the same as a g10 millie. It carries kinda good so far. Its flat/thin, so thats good, but the depth (from back of handle to spine when closed) is alot. But that could be just me, just a personal preference of mine. I don't carry the manix or lionsteels sr1 for that reason, and look how successful those models are.
But all in all, I'm in love with it (still in honeymood stage of course)! It's a little different then i thought it would be, but alot better then i expected.
